No blower- first on low/med then on high too.
Anyone have a pic or diagram they can post for reference when I replace the resistor pack?

Guys: my wife and son and I are flying out to MS on the 23rd to celebrate his 1st birthday with my folks, as well as pick up my 97 Talon. My Dad said the two low speeds on the blower motor died, then High died. I asked him to see if he can test out the blower motor with a multimeter, and the wires leading to it. If someone could be so kind as to unplug their fan and test the 3 wires so I can tell him what voltage he should be seing on each one I would really appreciate it.

I'm assuming now that if I can't get voltage at the blower motor plug and all fuses are ok, then it will be the resistor pack.... Correct? If anyone can get a good pic of where I can find the resistor pack that would be great as reference material.

I've still got to drop the motor and see whats in there making noise when it was on before. probably a pine needle or something.

If anyone does test their motor soon, could you post back something along the lines of

High = x color wire = x.x volts
med = x color wire = x.x volts
Low = x color wire = x.x volts

ground/negative/common = x color wire

that would be most helpful to future users. If not I'll do it in June when I get back.

I think I should be able also to run the fan off one of my 9.6 v drill batteries, has anyone tried this?

Thanks for everyone's help!

ok first i don't have your specs my car is far away. next you can run the fan off the drill battery but it most likely won't last very long and won't blow as much air.(the coils in the blower motors weren't exactly designed to be energy efficient. also if you go to a junk yard and get a bad part they will take it back. if they are mean and say they won't then have them pull out one of them used batteries under the counter (which no one will buy) and test it right there in front of you. bring some wires with to, to test it.

you shouldn't mention the junk yard some times because some people will say automatically that blower motor you are going to get isn't going to be good enough for, ### its used. or they may say get a high performance blower motor with a 16G compressor wheel so this way that cold air can get to you fast. maybe even with 16psi. then it would be up to peoples standards of a blower motor

also one more thing if you say it is a blower motor, then how would you run it off the battery, isn't the motor dead

if you know what is ground and what should be hot run wires from the battery in the car to the pins to test it. you never know it could be the switch

Sorry:

I can see how that might have been misinterpreted.

My car is 1200 miles away also. My dad is going to try and test the motor for continuity (ohms) and the wires leading to it for voltage to see of it is an open circuit in the fan or elsewhere.

If it looks like it is the fan, then I want to test the fan motor I am going to look for in one of the local yards with the multimeter for continuity and if it seems ok then run it off one of my drill batteries. If it blows out 6 months from now that is fine I can test and fix it myself but I am trying to Diagnose this remotely, and take a known working part with me. The yards out here don't give warranty on electrical parts, and if I have a bad one it would defeat the entire reason for carrying it with me.

I have to take the blower motor with me and install it in the talon (therby getting the A/c defrost etc working) before we bring the car out here again, or I will be in a 100+ degree oven for 8 hours a day for 2 days with an angry wife and child!

sorry to hear that but i also explained how to test the blower motor to. even with out measuring its resistance.

hook up ground and power to it.

if it works then maybe its your switch

I was already aware that I can test a motor by plugging it in.
I can't do that from here.
nor can my dad.
we don't know yet which wires are power ( i have been told there are 2 powers) and ground on the motor.

nor does he have a drill battery or other power supply, or x feet of wire to test it out with.
Thanks for your help though.

This was exactly my problem, I don't know what pins are which, and my Dad is an older gentleman who is testing this out for me. I could do it in 5 minutes if i had my car or another 2g here but I dont. Can anyone help? PLease please please?

defiant:

where would find this resistor pack?

testing for voltage at the plug would confirm this diagnosis correct?

I think my parents got something in the housing which is why I was thinking it was the motor. there was a tapping noise from the housing as if there were somethign in there in the months before it died.

Thanks for any additional info you can provide.

Thanks defiant. Apparently it is behind the Glovebox somewhere, and I'll just have to trace the blower motor wires back to tell where. I'll have to check the 3-4 relay too.

The resistor pack that controls the motor speeds has died. Replace.

The blowers don't fail very often.

Ok got the resistor (very easy to replace) and plugged it in when I got to MS. Still no blower.

Turns out hte lower bearing failed on the blower, that is what was causing the tapping noise as the fan wobbled about in the housing, and eventually took the resistor with it.

Thanks to someone who had wrecked a 99 in my home town just two days earlier I got the fan for only 50 bucks which solved the problem.

Now that was a big pain to get out!

Your real lucky it was the blower motor. I was having similar problems with mine, so I changed the A/c Relay and the Resistor pack, and still didn't have any luck. I got tired of driving with out A/c so I ran a wire from the 3-4 Relay to the Positive big blue wire that connects to the blower motor housing and poof. Problem solved. I guess that I must have had a wiring problem to begin with. ;)

The blower fan on my 97 Talon Tsi only has 2 wires . The fan started making noise 6 months ago but I didnt want to mess with it...well eventually the think stopped working in all speed except high. I pulled it out today and to my surprise found a little mouse stuck inside the squirrel cage...guess he couldn't run fast enough ! LOL I checked the voltage at all 4 speed. High was 12.31v and the other 3 read the same at 8.06v. Do I need to replace the resistor or is it in the switch ?
