Head Gasket Repair

I took my car to the shop and they said that my valve stem seals are leaking. And that i need to replace the head gasket. I bought some Permanent Metallic Block Seal to repair the head gasket for now. Has anyone used this and is it helpful. Thanks in advance

Ive never heard of it, although I'm not a beleiver in cheap fixes, especially on something as important as a headgasket. Change it, its not too bad.

i can do a head gasket and re-time the engine w/ out replacing the t-belt in just about 4 hours

That is a horrible way to do it. Why not actually fix the problem and just be done with it, instead of spending more money to do a buch of half assed repairs?

He's right. I work at NAPA and we have people come in and get stuff like that all the time to seal headgaskets and radiators. Some order the headgasket or radiator that day and just use it for a temp. fix. Some though get mad when it only works for a little while then was worse then before and tries to get us to pay for the bill because we sold it to them.

If you can do a timing belt then just save yourself the aggravation. If you keep waiting for the head gasket to let go your just going to have a mess on your hands. I've never worked on cars before I bought my DSM took me an afternoon to get the job done. Be sure and have something like PB Blaster for getting your exhaust mani apart and you'll be fine.

Cool. Thanks guys, yea I was alittle iffy about using that stuff. The only problem is that im looking at a $800 bill. It is really that hard to change it?

It's not that it's that hard by any means it just takes time. I made mine a weekend project and everything went pretty smooth. Of course I was also pulling the head to go my headgasket so it had to come off anyways. Just takes time to line everything up and make sure it's in time. Then you'll be really nervous when you do to start it up for the first time .

I would do it yourself,you can get a head kit for about $250 and the belts about $100

Upper gasket set and a timing belt. If you don't know when it was done last better to do it now.

I agree go to Mitsu, and pick up your gasket. You may luck up and need the head gasket only. The way I see it is using that stuff. Is sorta like putting a felpro gasket on it. Its gonna go just a matter of time. To give an idea of why we need a good gasket. A torque monster Mustang can run a felpro all day long. Put one under boost on a DSM, and its a ticking time bomb, and from what I see you were planning on paying someone to do the work. Are you going to want to pay that twice? As far as the timing belt. If its fairly new you can always reuse it. Doing the timing belt IMO would be the hardest part for you in the how process of doing it yourself. Good luck.
