i removed my head today and the arp studs were loose after i got the head off and some were sticking out higher than others, is that normal? Also, the headgasket had oil on it like it was loose or something(pic attached). I had some leaks from the oil cap and the dipstick blew off twice so figured i had crankcase pressure. the car was also blowing white smoke from the exhaust and valve cover breather (coolant possibly)? So because of these problems i did a compression test and this is what i got [ 150 150 75 110 ].
i was like damn 75? i figured the rings were done which is why i removed the head to further investigate and i found the loose studs and oil on the headgasket. Do u think it was that the head was poorly torqued causing the coolant/oil enter the combustion chamber(whitesmoke) and lowered the compression of the cylinders? Also, i "WET" tested cylinder #2 and it went from 75 to 120 thats why i thought it was the rings not the headgasket. I want to know if you think i should retorque the headgasket or Re do the rings. i dont want to put the motor back together and then it still has low compression. Could a poorly torqued headgasket cause my compression to be that low? ANY thoughts welcome. thanks in advance

you can see the oil around the where the studs are

oh and theres alot of oil on the block sealing surface underneath the headgasket too.....

Were all the head bolts tight when you removed them, The arp studs just get run in and could of backed out while removing the nuts.

yes, but some of them were WAY to easy to remove like they werent torqued down to spec. Keep them potential problems coming.....

ARP studs should be installed finger tight. Because the head gasket will compress upon initial torquing, the studs will have to be re-torqued after the engine has been run.

It's hard to say what has actually happened here, but I think it's pretty clear what you need to do at this point. If you think the piston rings are ok, get a new headgasket, resurface the cylinder head, check the length of the arp studs, and put it all back together correctly.

fasho, thats the stuff i wanna hear LOL. Can i re-use these arp's and what length should they be?? how much should i torque them to? what kind of lube for the threads? Anyone else have thoughts on my situation?

You should buy an owner's manual. You're supposed to take them off in 2 or 3 stages then install them the same way. I could look up the numbers and post them if you can't find them.

i know the sequence to remove and install them. i just want to know the answer to the questions in my previous post. ive heard of people over torquing past spec because arp's are so strong, is that true?

Not meaning to threadjack, but I bought ARP studs. Is it a different procedure when putting them in when I put my head back on?

dont jack my thread. yes theres 2 sequences, one for install and one for removal of head bolts.

BUCK, it was a 4layer metal head gasket i got from extremepsi.com. I can't remember the brand.

Anyone think its ok to re use these arp's???

ARP's are fine to reuse with your love mileage on them. Pull them all out and make sure the holes are perfectly clean. I have a friend who put his headstuds in while there was still some oil in the holes and the studs would never properly tighten. Other than that just make sure to retorque after you get the car to operating temp. and do a couple pulls.
