So this new project I'm working on has a weird problem. One side of the rear hatch sits up about .5" higher then it should. The bolts for the hinge are tight, the car has never been in an accident, all other body panels line up perfect, doors close effortlessly, etc. This just really confuses me, it seems almost like the hatch was closed on something and it bent the roof structure, but how would it do so on just one side. I wonder if this is something I could take care of by unbolting the hatch and taking a look. I was going to try and replace the hinges, but I don't know if that'll do the trick. Ideas anyone? Pictures are enclosed.

Thanks!

I have this exact same thing on my 1ga that I bought as a complete shell - can't wait to see if someone chimes in with what it could be.

Anyone have any input on this yet? I'm headed to the JY this weekend to pick up some hinges to see if this solves the problem. I spent about 10 minutes comparing this car to my red car and the roof frame does not appear to be bent, nor does the hatch itself. I'm just wondering how this happened, or if anyone else has ever run across this. Thanks!

Yeah I'm really bumped no one has replied to this yet, let me know your findings!
I will be doing a hinge replacement as well if it solves your issue.

My eyes may be wrong but to me it looks more like the pillar part is low.

Nope.. The pillar lines up with the roof and the roof is square across. It's the hatch.. The hatch sits about .5" above the weather stripping. It doesn't come close to sealing up. It's the strangest thing ever. The only thing I can conclude is that somehow, some way the hinge on one side got bent.

Must be.

Can you see at all if the hatch looks like it's bent right where the hinge mounts to it?

It doesn't appear to be. You would think you'd be able to spot something a half inch off, but nothing looks out of place, oddly. I think once I get the hatch off the car and get the hinges out for better inspection I'll be able to tell better.

BTW, thanks for responding!

I bet someone had it propped up with a stick because of non working hatch struts and went to close it with the stick still in it.. Only thing I can think of.

Went to the junk yard today and picked up another hatch. After getting the old one off it was apparent the old hatch was bent. Either someone closed a solid object in it at the weatherstripping or someone tried to pry it open. Either way a new hatch solved the problem and it only cost $40 for the hatch. There is no way bad hinges could throw it off as far as mine was.

Good to know yet disappointing, at least it's not the frame of the car is bent or something like that more major.
