Calgary,
Hi, I've recently gotten a '90 :talon: tsi awd and it's running great, except for a grinding noise.
I searched the forums here and found this question asked before, but never answered.
When the car is in gear and you take your foot completely off the gas to let it coast it grinds.
It doesn't happen out of gear, or when you give it a little throttle.
It appears to be coming out of the rear, so i was thinking the diff was making the noise.

I was wondering if this was serious, and what there is to be done to fix it. And even if it doesn't cause any problems, it's decently loud when you are outside of the car. Thanks a lot

I've got a 92 Laser RS AWD that did the same thing. I never could find a definitely answer either but here are the thingS the we tried.

1) check to make sure that the drive shaft is clear of the exhaust. (usually that grinds under acceleration though)

2) check the fluid in the transfer case and rear differential. I can't remember the socket size but you are going to need a thin wall or be able to grind down a socket that you have. Mitsu doesn't give you much room on the drain plug. If you do drain the fluid check to inside of the plug for metal shavings.

3) Pull the transfer case and replace the seals. (on my car the rear seal in the transfer case was shot and as I down shifted or let the car decelerate in gear, it would spit gear oil on the driveshaft which inturn slung it on the exhaust, which I could smell when I came to a stop)

After we did all this to my car the noise got better, but is still remained. I sent the transfer case to a tranny shop but due to the circumstances didn't get them to open it up and check the gears. They just swapped out the seals for me. Let me know if you figure it out because I think we have the same issue.

Good Luck
Thomas

Thanks. The guy i bought it from said he noticed it happen on the TSi he had before the one i purchased and said it was not a big problem. I just wanted to get some info to double check.

If i find anything i'll send you a shout
