95 Talon Tsi AWD Automatic, car was shaking all the time on highway and I suspected bent rims, so I bought new rims. Put them on today and now the car is a little better, but it still shakes under deceleration. I dont mean braking, and yes the rotors are fine. I suspected the inner CV joint is bad on the passenger side. I was under the car and checked all suspension compents and there is no play in anything. The CV joint on the passenger side however if you rotate the tire with it jacked up only on that side, (so you can really only rotate it maybe 1/10th of a turn back and forth) but holding the half-shaft I can see and feel the CV joint on the trans side basically moving all over. My assumption is that there should be no play, but there is a lot. It's moving the boot all arround it's so bad. No tears in the boot however.

Vibration-
- Starts at about 60 MPH and progressively gets worse the faster I go, but it is a LOT better under hard acceleration. As soon as I let off the gas it gets progressively worse. The Passenger side tire also had strange wear in that both the inner and outer edge were cuped. And the tire was properly inflated.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, if I dont hear anything I'm going to replace the half shaft tomorrow anyway, it couldn't hurt the car has 113k miles on it.

I have to some extent. Basically I tried to shake the tire in any direction I could, I even went as far as to take the rotors off and make sure everything was flushly mounted and there was no rust causing the tire to be off ballance - as i've had the tires off more than a few times. No movement in any direction however. How could I tell if the wheel bearings were bad, I would expect there to be play in the tire?

Since the problem is traced to accel/decel you can probably rule out to a point things like balance and such. When I have a vibration associated with these parameters I usually find it's in the axles. If you have play I would especially look at them.

Good Luck

Yeah I'm almost positive it's the passenger side half-shaft (axle). I see a good amount of play at the CV joint on the trans side. I'm going to attempt replacement today. I hear it can be fun if it doesn't want to let loose.
