grinding sound

I couldn't find a thread that's similar to my problem so here's another "grinding problem" thread... The sound occurs when I start my car from a cold start... After my car warms up, then the sound goes away... However, here's what happens... When I start my car, there's a grinding sound that you can hear somewhat from the inside of the car, but when you go outside, you can definitely can hear it. As to the location of the noise, that's difficult to figure out... The sound does go away when I push the clutch pedal in (i think that means that the clutch is disengaged) and it shifts just fine when I'm driving... So, I'm thinking that I need a new clutch kit. Does anybody have any ideas as to what's wrong? Or am I on the right track with getting a new clutch... haven't changed it since I got it 3 1/2 years ago... and it has ~130k miles... so ya.

AN old school method of finding where a noise is coming from is to use a piece of wood about 3 feet longish. Put one end on various parts of the car (alternator, block, valve cover, turbo, etc) and your ear on the other end. I'd start there and you may be able to narrow down the culprit.

PS Try it on the tranny and the starter also. Too bad you can't quite get to the water pump...you may be able to put it on that water pipe that exits the water pump if you are creative with the shape of the stick you're using

Does pushing in the clutch make any difference in the noise?

ya, when i push in the clutch, the sound goes away... but when i lift my foot again, it starts to make the sound...

If that is the case, then it is the throw out bearing. Does it sound like marbles in the tranny?

yes, i was trying to find out a description of what it sounds like, and that's probably the closest you could come to describing the sound... Any suggestions if it is the TOB?

well, after google-ing "420a throwout bearing" it had links to others who had the same problem... thanks to everyone who looked, i'll just check out what others did...

Just put in a new clutch kit which will come with a throwout bearing and your problem should be solved

Yah, with how many miles you already have that clutch is probably about 80% used up. Replace it all when you are in there.

I just thought Id throw in my 2cents worth. I have this going on with my 90 GSX, exactly as you described it, and only when its cold/been sitting for a few days. My car has been doing this for a month, maybe more, and it still shifts fine. Unless you really want to, I would say just dont mess with it. It is the TOB, and it does that when it gets low on grease or was greased incorrectly if someone was messing with yer tranny. Some people have had their clutch go out a week or so after they heard this, but I havnt had any problems whatsoever. You could replace yer clutch, its ###### that time, but if yer short on cash, like myself, I wouldnt worry too much about it.
