car died and failed to restart. nothing was visibly wrong and compression/timing belt was ok. i took the plugs out, they were wet with fuel. next thing i checked was the coil. correct me if i did this wrong, i only used my own common sense. i disconnected the harness from the coil. on my 96 gsx it had three prongs. i turned the ignition on and with my test light got power from the center prong. i decided that the other two would pulse when the engine is cranked over. they didnt. so i decided that the ecu has decided not to signal the coil to spark. which in turn makes me believe the crank sensor is bad. i know i dont suffer from crankwalk and if i remember correctly the previous owner replaced the sensor along with the timing/balance belts. before i tear the entire left side of my car out is there something else it could be or some type of diagnosis i could do before hand?? i dont have access to any ecu code readers. i could use some knowledge on the crank sensor itself too. if i do replace it is there any adjusting to it? and ive heard that a 96 7bolt 4g63 doesnt have a cam angle sensor, correct? i swear.. if it werent for all the damn sensors on these cars id be a master mechanic... HELP!

Well, i love to suggest this.... i would check your power transistor. If you follow the wires coming from the coil pack, you should be able to find it. It looks just like a gameboy game that plugs into a harness. It will have eight prongs on the wire harness. If you have a repair manual, turn to page 5-4 or so, and it will run you through the procedure on how to check this component. Hope i have contributed.

Though I am not a moderator, I would suggest not posting 2 threads of the same thing, hoping to get more responses...Or, well for any reason...I wonder if Defiant is gunna stroll on by this here thread haha..

All 2gs have a cam sensor and a crank sensor. It's just that the 97-99 have the cam sensor mounted similar to the 1g and the 95-96 have a sensor that sits inside the intake cam gear. You can always get a 1g cas and wire it into your car. It'll provide both the crank and cam signals and you can tune your base timing with it. You *may* get the phantom knock problem though so it's up to you. Also, double check the coil pack. You should use a ohmeter to measure resistance. I'm not saying that your method is wrong, but there's a more correct way of doing it.
