2002 WRX,
Well my 1G is finally getting new shocks and struts to rplace the original equipment. I am getting a set of KYB AGX's off eBay or the tirerack.com .

How can I tell if I need other parts? I am reading about bump stops and strut boots and shock mounts. Is there a way to inspect the existing parts, or should I just replace them too? If I should replace them, what do I need to get?

Wow a lot of questions, sorry and thanks! OMG

I'm in the middle of re-doing the entire suspension on my 1G AWD as well. The only real advice you will need with the AGX's is that if you are going to be putting lowering springs in the car, you will most likely need to cut your bumpstops. You can find some very good information on this at http://www.vfaq.com. I'm also replacing all my suspension bushings with polyurethane ones, the only real way to tell if you need anything else is to do a visual inspection of the parts and see if anything is worn. As for springs, if you are keeping the stocks, check if any side of the car seems to be sagging more than others, which could indicate a bad spring.

You can use your original equipment, and just replace the shock assembly. (I assume you're using stock springs.)
Just check for cracks, corrosion and rust.
AGX's, with stock springs will give you a reasonable ride of smoothness and performance. Stiffer compression and rebound, with no pogo-effect. Be sure to rent a spring compressor to mount the springs. (It's approx. $10 at Kragen.)

Thanks for the input. I ended up having a shop do the install, and am glad I did, it took almost all day to get the rears off. They showed me the old rear shocks that they had to CUT OFF they were rusted on.

Anyway now I have a much smoother ride at full soft, and I will dial in the best balance over the next few days. I should have upgraded the the shock/struts years ago.

Oh and I thrashed $25,000 WRX's at the local rally-x .
