Ok so im pretty much a newbie when it comes to DSM's, but im willing to learn by trying, dont want to take it to a dealer for everything. Anyway i bought an aftermarket tach and a boast gauge, now im going to mount them on the left near the A piller (not on the a piller) but in two mounting cups near it, i plan on drilling threw the dash to run the wires into the opening behind the stock gauges, now i have the bezzal and the stock gauges pulled out, and i have three plugs behind it. Now i come to the hard part im sure, behind witch plug are the wires for the tach? and what wire? where can i tap into power for the two gauges? also i would like to run them into the dimmer, what would be the easyest way? also one other thing, where is the best place to tap into the vac system on the car for the boast gauge? and easyest way to run the tubing threw the firewall for it?

i posted this in the newbie foarm also, didint really know where to post
Thanks for help

i come from a largely z28 back ground and from my past experances with them, the factory tach is off a little bit.

because the most obvious and important performance modification is a larger tachometer. by increasing the size of the tachometer (and more importantly making it light up when you're supposed to shift) adds around 10-12 hp on a stock production vehicle already equipped with a tachometer, yet oddly adds nothing when added to an actual race car.

1) you won't get a boost reading from tapping in behind the stock gauge cluster, you will need an actual boost source, such as the vacuum tap on the intake manifold.
2) you won't get a tach output from tapping in behind the stock gauge cluster, the pickup behind the stock tach is already modulated to display the RPM on the tach, you need an actual pickup off the coil, the tach itself will modulate it's own signal for display, the wire you need to tap is right between the fuel rail and the head, it's a white wire that leads into the coil packs.
As for accessory and ignition on and ground you can get those anywhere you want, there were some open fuse spots in my fuse box for the accessory and I was able to locate a voltage source for the lights at night.

Lets stay on topic guys, the post asks about how to hook up gauges, not your personal opinions about what gauges he should or shouldn't have. If your not gonna help don't post.

Oh no the tachometer is only worth maybe 5hp i mean come on its a tach, all the stickers im going to plaster it with thats where my real power is going to come from.

Thanks for the help

nothing serious here guys, shit just poking a little fun. i've heard horror stories of modded camaros shifting too late in one of the first gears and messing things up when they're really 500rpm or so farther up the tach than they thought. trust me though our tachs don't seem to have this defficiency. a better alternative to your problem might be a simple cluster swap to a 2.0 nt face. the 2.0 nt's don't have the stock boost guage encroaching on their tachometer and have a larger range of motion because of that. they'll still read perfectly fine (i have this setup on my car nt cluster and turbo engine and ecu) and it works perfectly. then you could just setup a shift light so you didn't have two tach's yet still had a cheap and easier read larger tachometer and a shift light without the gawky look of a monster tach stuck somewhere to your dash. i just personally hate the looks of those things even in cars that may actually need them.
