Front Differential Dissasembly!

I'm hoping there's some people on here that have torn into their transmissions as much as I have that could help me out.....

I'm installing my BMTranny LSD.

I've got the front differential on my floor. It's out of the trans, but here's my question:

Is removing the ring gear really necessary to get the lock pin and the pinion shaft out? It looks almost like you could get the lock pin out without removing the gear, but I'm not sure, because I keep on bending up my punches and I don't seem to be getting anywhere.

So, do I need to remove the ring gear, or just get stronger punches?
