what's the word on these POS fords reliability and power wise? i am considering getting one to beat the piss out of. or keep it for a lil' throw a MBC and chip in it...
performance wise i am going to assume its lacking...
should be good enough to kill any honda in my town though...




i've been looking for a DSM that will trade strait a crossed for my audi, but there's no real interest... except a AWD 1ga, which i don't think is going to work out.

What kind of Audi do you have?

I raced a Probe GT in my 1g and raped it, and my car was all stock, his had a huge fart can and god only knows what else. I dunno about a turbo though.
 
89 audi 80 FWD, loaded except quattro and leather, it's a pretty chitty condition, but it looks like it was anally taken care of by the PO's up until the last one... gauge cluster problems... needs new brake pads... was rear ended
 
They are non interference :/ blahhh, is it a old stlye stock gt turbo, or a newer gt with a turbo setup?

As long as you don't put a bp in it..
 
They are slow, a buddy of mine was big into them a few years back. They are basically a mazda 2.3 turbo motor with a tiny tiny turbo. But his was reliable as hell till he started modding it and melted a piston.
 
I bought a new V6 Probe in 1999 because the Turbo had about the same max HP and much less low end torque. That car had a few problems over the years but it was not beaten on.
 
My buddy had one. It was fun to beat around in but slower than shit. As for reliability it was horrible...
 
Had a few friends who used to own probes with the turbo klze engines. They were always broken so Id stay away.
 
well the 1ga AWD guy texted me, so i am going to try to meet him... the problem is my audi doesn't have plates, i'm not going to pay to transfer the chit, and the AWD is a hour away... i can go 1/4th of the way on all backroads... i could do it on a sunday because my dad sells cars(can get dealer plate), but my dad would start b*tching as soon as he saw the problems and chit... and i don't want to listen to his BS for that long... i am going to check on temp tags tomorrow, see if i need to transfer the title and how much they cost.

The ZE was never a turbo motor. A turbo ZE, I could see why it was always broken. The stock valve springs were weaker than the DE and people would over rev them, float valves, and go boom.

Its a Mazda 2.2 with a small IHI on it. People have made 300ftlbs on a stock turbo. Though sadly, that is the limit of that turbo. Tuning isnt really easily obtained short of a full stand alone or a Megasquirt. Which, is where most people think they can skimp and just raise fuel pressure because they are cheap.

i had a 89 gt as a winter beater! was a great dd, its not fast but its certainly not kill yourself slow.
those 1st gen probes run forever! they routinely get over 200k miles
1st and 2nd gens have gone over 200k many many times. Its just a matter of actually taking care of the car. Many of them were beat on, abused, and never maintained. Which is why people always hate them when they break. "Its a shitty car", "These things break for no reason.", etc. Sound familiar?;)

All in all, I have had 3 2nd gen GTs and they were great. The only time they broke, was due to me. Not once did I have any of the common/stereotype problems with the car. Hell, I got one for $400 it sat outside for 4 years, and needed a battery, distributor, and a timing belt. The odometer didn't work, so who knew how many miles it really had on it. The water pump/timing system were all factory original, and had 156k on them for sure. Again, who knows how many miles the guy I got it from drove it.

I went through, did all the maintenance it needed and drove it for a year. Before cooking the motor, from my own stupidity. I decided to change the radiator in it, the new one leaked worse than the old one. So, I took it out to return it to the parts store, put the old one in. Dumped a half gallon of coolant in it, just to get to the store at the corner and back. Well, I was stupid and in a rush, so I opened up the system and collapsed the radiator. I let it cool over night, filled it up so I could go back home the next day and, baked it.

If it wasn't for that, Id still have the car as a beater.
 
i have owned a 1g probe non turbo it was surprisely pepper for a 2.2 sohc and a 2g probe gt.. the 2g is faster then a 99 bmw 325I stock for stock, as for the 1g gt turbo goes injectors are available bigger turbos are available and megasquirt is the stand alone of choice for them


250 hp is easily attainable on a 1g probe turbo with the proper modifications, but aftermarket support is very limited.. probetalk.com or probeaddiction.com are a good place to start.

2g probe gts are much sexier tho i still have one, many people have attained 300whp off 6-8 psi depending on turbo kit and tuneing.. there only downfall is the transmission is prety week.
