Kitchener,
In the pic you see here, there is a red circle around the tranny linkage, it moves freely up and down, towards the front of the car and the rear, not to the ground and hood, well it moves to that way to but my question is can it be fixed without taking the tranny apart?

I just had the same problem with mine. What I did was took off the shifter cables and unbolted the nut at the pivot point and cleaned and greased it up real good then reasembled it. Works great now.

From what I can see your bushings look pretty worn (just by the fact the rubber is squeezing out of the one that's sitting vertical). I'd suggest getting the bushings replaced and see if you still have the slack in the lever you are talking about. I did both the linkage bushings and the shifter plate inside the center tunnel and it made a huge difference to my gear changes.

lever having excess play inside the tranny before shifting into gear is what im talking about..
Well (if you're first absolutely sure it's not a worn lever bushing or the shifter or cables that are not held ridgedly in place - which 9 out of 10 times is the case) most other things that can have excess play on that "into gear" lever are inside the tranny. Some that I can think of off-hand are (note that all pics are from my 2g):

1) worn shift fork - very common and if bad enough often accompanied with popping out of a gear (see http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/att...st-gear-pop-best-worst-3rd-4th-shift-fork.jpg)

2) control finger worn or more likely loose on it's lock pin - this would affect all gears (see attached pic)

3) shift fork loose on shift rail or loose on it's lock pin - this would affect a gear pair 1st/2nd or 3rd/4th or 5th/rev.

4) There is one thing you can do from the outside (at least on the 2g, don't know about 1g) but it doesn't account for much play, the interlock plate bolt - 2nd paragraph here: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/new...build-dsm-fwd-transmission.html#post151768934
