ok after MONTHS of procrastination, i finally installed my boost gauge. The bad news is, the boost sucks ass. It doesnt start building boost until it hits like 2600 rpms and hits full boost at like 4k at only 6 or 7 psi. Anybody know why it could be doing this? The hose i'm using is fairly long (about 4 or 5 feet) so im not sure if that has anything to do with it. Any help would be appreciated. One thing I know of that could be wrong is a boost leak, so i'll be sure to get that checked. Could there be anything else? Bad turbo perhaps?

Check for boost leaks in your intake. The VFAQ has instructions on how to build a boost leak tester. If there are no leaks in your intake, then the most likely next culprit is with your turbocharger exhaust housing. 1G's tend to develop leaks around the wastegate area of the housing which results in the exhaust gasses being bypassed earlier than they should, resulting in lower boost levels.

i see thanks. It's also weird because when ever im driving at WOT from 2500 to 3k i hear a loud hissing sound and then the bov when i let of the thottle at 3k. after 3k, all i hear is the hissing sound and no bov. is the hissing sound the sound of a boost leak or is that how a turbo is supposed to sound?

is it like a hissing sound or more like a whining sound because a buddy of mine has a really bad turbo(one of the fins on the propeller is bad) and it makes a really bad whining noise(sounds like a supercharger...) and his car takes forever to build boost....

Chances are that you used the plastic hose that comes with most boost gauges... That line can kink and crack causing a bad boost leak. Try to change it out for something else like copper tube (I am sure there are many other alternatives)

question : how do can i adapt the copper tub to the boost gauge and manifold fitting ? and what size copper tub?
OHH and i heard that the less hose the better, is that true ?

no actually i've read that those hoses suck, so i went out n bought a 1/4 inch rubber hose (seems kinda thick to me though).

no its definitley a hissing sound, not a whining sound. it sounds like a snake hissing.

Get a 1/4" rubber hose and an adapter for your boost gauge. You should be able to get these at pretty much any good auto store. The hissing noise you're describing is most likely a boost leak, but could POSSIBLY be your turbo fins hitting the housing wall. When my T25 died, I heard a scraping noise, but I suppose it could be described as a hissing. But my bet's on a boost leak. If you're using the 1G BOV, I get a whistling noise from it every once in a while. Also, did you install the boost gauge on the line between the intake manifold and the fuel pressure solenoid? If not, you may be getting a weird boost signal if you tapped from somewhere else.

yeah thats what i got, a 1/4" hose (are they supposed to be that thick?) and if by adapter you mean something like a threaded female end and a non threaded male end, yeah i got one of those too. And no, I never hear any scraping sounds, just hissing, its especially loud in closed areas. The boost does hit it's stock amount, (6-7 psi) just a little too late. And yes i did tap it into the FPS. And although since the hoses were different sizes, (the boost gauge hose and the fps hose) i had to use an extra fitting to fit into the 'T' fitting to connect the hoses so i don't know if this would've affected boost readings.

The adapter I'm talking about is a brass fitting that's got a female threaded end to fit on the back of the gauge and a male nozzle for the hose to fit on. It came with my VDO gauge I think. It also came with the white plastic hose, but I bought the extrememotorsports boost gauge install kit, which comes with everything needed, so there was no difference in sizes between the FPS hose and the gauge hose. What turbo are you running to only get 6-7 psi? T25's peak at around 12-13, 14b's a little lower.

yeah i have the same brass fitting. i'm running the 14b. i'm pretty sure stock boost is around 7 psi. i might need to look into the boost gauge install kit. according to the boost gauge, my turbo is lagging, but i'm starting to think that it might just be because of the way i have it connected and the hose that i'm using. It's a thick 1/4" hose i bought at NAPA. It came pre-cut and packaged. Is this what most people are using? Does anybody have pictures of the kinds of hoses you guys are using to use for the gauge?

If you're using a 14b on the stock boost control solenoid, 7psi sounds about right. :) That surprised me also when I switched turbos. If you don't have an aftermaket boost controller, I suggest getting one. Turning up the boost from 7psi to 15psi on the 14b makes a huge difference.

This is the fitting for the boost gauge:

And it's hard to see in this pic, but this is the install kit I bought:

For the hose, it's just standard 1/4 vacuum line. If you want to get spiffy you can buy colored silicone hose, but it's hardly noticeable.

Edit: For some reason I thought you had a 2g, not a 1g. Still, that boost seems low. Make a leak tester and test for leaks.

does that boostgauge install kit work with the autometer ultra lite series? i mean the fitting will fit the gauge right? And the 'T' fits the fpr hoses AND the gauge hose? if that's all you need then i'll probably just end up buying the kit even though it seems like i have everything already. but for $10, its nice to be sure that i'm doing it right.
