hey everyone i know this is the cheepo method of getting out of paying some mechanic to pull my engine codes but i have a supra and my friend has a 240 and i have been able to pull engine codes from those two with a paperclip and a screwdriver.
i have been looking arround and i cant find anything that shows how to pull the ecu codes from the car. its been taken to a shop already and we got a code 31, (knock sensor) but the overall charge of service was like $75.
in all honesty, #### that. is there a way i can check this on my own, i know how to pull them off an auto tranny ecu but aside from that theres nothing.

I'll answer since everybody seems to have a revolving stick up their a$$es with 50 grit sand paper :toobad: ....Take an analog volt meter, the kind with the needle, touch terminals 1 and 12 and watch the sweeps, for example, code 31 which u said u pulled would show three long sweeps, and then a quick single sweep, the next code will do the same thing after the last quick single sweep. If you dont quite understand it, go pull the code, then re-read this. Mind polarity also.

check vfaq.com ,for complete instructions. but you can use a multimeter and count the pulse's.the long pulse's are the first digit and the short pulse's are the second digit. the pins to use are 1 and 12 i beleive. you only turn your car on dont start it,but check vfaq to make sure.

Before dataloggers were common and almost free for 1G's I'd use a 12v piezo buzzer from radio shack and a couple of microclips to read codes from the ECU. It can be difficult reading the codes on a digital multimeter but it's really easy to count the beeps. Pin 1 on the DLC is going to be the positive connector and pin 12 the ground.
