ECMlink DSMLink ECU MPI relay clicking

I tried to install my dsmlink i got used locally last night, but as soon as I key the car, the MPI relay goes nuts clicking, and the laptop can't even communicate with the car. Then when i try to turn the key off, it wont. have to disconnect the battery to get it to stop.
I then reinstalled my chipped Eprom i have been running, and works perfect.

I am assuming that the caps have gone bad on the dsmlink ECU, and my plan is to swap the chips. My question is this: the ecu w/ dsmlink has a red wire soldered that goes somewhere under the main board. I have no clue what it is for. Is this a part of dsmlink because my chipped eprom ecu does not have this.

I can tell you that the red wire is not a part of DSMLink. DSMLink simply proves a specially programmed EPROM that replaces the factory EPROM in your ECU. If you have a socketed ECU and you install DSMLink yourself, you simply remove the factory EPROM from the socket and install the DSMLink EPROM in its place - nothing else is done to the ECU. I would be suspicious of the ECU with the red wire soldered to it. It would probably be worth a try to install the DSMLink EPROM into your chipped EPROM ECU - at least you'll know that ECU is functioning properly. Just make sure you install the EPROM in the proper orientation and that you do not bend any pins when installing it into the socket.

Sometime when a novice socket's an ecu they scratch or burn the tracks around the socket. The red wire is probably a bridge to get around a burnt out track. At least it was in my case when I socketed my own ecu.

The clicking is also a symptom of a poorly done socket job not making a full connection. I had that issue until I soldered in a new wire to fix the broken track. Perhaps the wire just came lose?

I would do what zippyshoe said....That would be the easiest way to get around your problem. Or send the dsmlink with the bad ecu to dave at dsmlink for his "repair service". Also you should contact them to get access to there forum If you haven’t yet.

2g ECU's don't usually have leaky capacitors. I doubt that is your problem.

Your both dead on. I swapped the chips and it works awesome. After i removed the chip, you can see that the socket job was done by a 2 year old, and the wire is a bridge. Not to happy my new ecu was in that condition.

And on a side note, DSMlink rocks. I dodn't realize how many qwerks my car had until they were all gone!m Cant wait to get tuning!!!

Glad to hear that your problem has been resolved. Now you can use that defective ECU as a handy paperweight!
