Diy Smim

Hello everyone, it's me again. I have researched the numerous threads regarding making your own smim, and studied hundreds of pictures of magnus/DVDT/AMS/Forrester manifolds. I have decided to use a runner design like dv/dtfab uses. Now here's the tricky part: Where would I get the rounded edge square tubing that DV/DT utilizes for the runners? I realize it is made from multiple pieces cut at angles. I have searched mcmaster, and various other metal tubing distributers with no luck so far.

thats a tuff one, might just have to use some regular squared tubing or round tubing. i dont see why it would hurt anything, unless you going for a certin look.

It's not so much the aspect of hurting anything that I'm worried about. I'm a perfectionist, and the cleanliness of that manifold really caught my eye over "squaring" the end of a tube to match the head ports, or using straight square tubing. I wrote an email to DV/DT, but I don't expect an answer about their supplier. I also really like the way that the runners match the shape of the head and the plenum flange, with a very smooth transition.

in the top right corner of that pic they are making their own tubing with that sheet metal shaping machine, then they tig the 2 halves together to make that nice looking tubing.

That actually does appear to be how they are doing it! I was driving myself crazy searching for this stuff. I was thrown off by the smoothness of the bend, and the lack of hammering marks, so I thought perhaps someone made that tubing. Nice observation though.

Thanks alot, the flange for the head is nearly done, and I will start on the runners soon. I'll be sure to post some pics when I get some progress worth posting about.

Alright, I have a little update on my progress so far. I have completed the runners for the most part, and have the flange for the head rough cut. I am taking lots of pictures, and may try to make a write up once I'm finished with it all. I think It's turning out great so far. Let me know what you guys think. Oh, I found it easier to make the runners out of round tubing, rather than the DVDTFab way.

well its too late now, but i was going to say,... those runners in the first picture look exactly like the ones used to make my dejon tool's smim.... EXACTLY... so if you wanted you could email dejon and ask them who their supplier is... they were very helpful with me when i was having problems installing my smim....(and i still am, but now its problems with the fmic fitting behind the bumper without cutting the bumper... i think i know what i have to do tho,... and since i have short route piping, if i have to cut the pipes it wont be complicated or anything)

im sure he would be glad to help you if you wanted... his email should be on his site, since i seemed to have lost the paper...

Thanks for the heads up. My round tube runners are looking pretty good, so i think I'll just stick with them, but I will definately keep dejontool in mind for any future projects, or if my round tube runners don't turn out well enough.

Will do, but I can only work on it on weekends, so progress will be a little slow. i will maybe make a write up when i'm done, i have a lot of pictures of the steps involved.
