I got the AF/X UDP installed by a shop. Well a few days after it was installed, I notice that my belts squeeked so bad when I turned on the climate control, ot turned the wheel hard to the right or left, and even sometimes when shifting. Sometimes if I got to turn the wheel, it'll run into resistance like it was already turned all the way. Theres no way I'd take the UDP off, but could the squeeks be caused by a bad belt?

i dont think its the belts, i have had mine on for about a month, and i got the same thing. my belts slowly started squeeking more and more during idle. ive been fighting with it over the last week with some belt conditioner that is suppose to get rid of squeeks. it will go away for a bit, then come back. today i got it to go away at idle, but it made this really ### noise at higher rpms. now its back to the old idle squeek but its not as bad. i also had that horrible screeching from turning the wheel all the way to the right or left, but that was only when i first started the car. after it warmed up it went away. so i dont think its the belts. but if anyone knows a cure im interested too, im sick of fighting it.

Are you guys using the belts that came with the pulley?

Well, its probably either that, or the pulley sits higher/lower than the stock, putting the belts at an angle. I want to get that pulley too, but I cant handle that kind of racket in my daily driver.

sacrifices have to be made :(

the belt does sit higher/ lower, cause the pulley is smaller

see, it comes off at a smaller angle

Hmm, let me describe better what I mean. I was speculating that maybe the new pulley is at a lower or higher elevation (pulley is closer or farther from the block/crank) than the stock.

oooooh got ya. ya i was wondering that, maybe i didnt push the new pulley on far enough. but it seems to be a common problem with them. i dunno got any ideas? besides tearing my car apart to get back to the pulley? :p

The 420a crank pulley is pressed on isnt it? Ouch. That means itll be hard to machine a spacer or something. Um, I guess if you have money just laying around, you could change belts and see if that fixes it. Lets wait till tomorrow or something and see if Doug99RS or anybody else chimes in. I have to save up till I can get one anyway ;)

Im going to do some serious Googling and see if I can find the dimensions of the UDP vs the stock one.

Looks like a lot of people run into that with UDPs. Even Ford owners.

Edit: I keep finding this as the solution for other cars on message boards. Have you tried it?

As for squeaking, yes, there was some after the installation, but tightening the belt tension took care of it.

Edit 2: Neon owners have the prob with Unorthodox pulleys, they all say dont use Unorthodox' belts, go to the auto parts store and get belts one size smaller(shorter?) than stock.

He recently moved, and is unpacking. He sent me a PM today (just got his 'net back) and is still unpacking. He'll be back.

Anyone comes up with a solution...Let me know...I tried sprayin the belts and im gettin ready to replace them...Anyone tries this and it works or doesnt work post it and let me know...thanks
Dan

tyr tightening your belts first cause new belts tend to stretch. i dont have a udp yet but when i bought my car it had the exact same problems so i tightened the ac ps belt and no more squeak and it was not hard to turn the wheel at low rpm any more

This may sound dumb but have any of you looked to see if your belts are lining up straight with everything else, try looking at your power steering pump or your altenator to see if everything is lined up.

Yes, I suggested that earlier. Thanks anyway. :thumb:

hey guys i just installed mine and i am now concerned after reading this thread....i haven't started my motor because i'm in the process of doing other upgrades.

i'm wondering if any of you only purchased the Crank pulley or the entire set including the WP, PS and ALT pulleys. Those that purchased the entire set are you having any issues with noise?

candle wax? Watd u put it rite on the belt? And is that good for it...wont cause slipping or nething stupid like that

Went to tighten the belts today...Tightened to the max...cant tigghten nemore safely...I guess ill try buyin a new belt of a smaller size...please neone thats tried this let me kno

I dont have one yet, but most of the people here bought the AF/x UDP, which is 30% under, so one doesnt really need to underdrive the other ones. I imagine if you underdrive the alternator too much, youd have probs. I could be wrong though.

thanks for the response. i went with unorthodox... i was under the impression that this was a common problem with all underdrive pulleys. i agree not to underdrive the accessories...the other pulleys would be for asthetics.

have any of you heard or had bad experiences with unorthdox?

I have an unorthodox...Same thing got the nasty squeal at idle...and its fine on a warm, sunny day...But if its not a perfect day...even if its like 60...or god forbid it rains...Squeals sooo much...And at nite forget it...squeal ownt go away for 15-20minutes

that's not good..so if you were to install the unorthodox WP, PS, and Alternator pulleys do you think the noise would go away or would that just be irrelevant?
