Datalogger/ Pocketlogger Review

Hey guys whats up. Just wanted to give a reiview of the DATALOGGER I got form ebay about 3 months ago.

The Package: Palm IIIc, Palm to diagnostics port cable, docking station (which comes attached with a wall socket charger and a serial adapter for the computer), software and instructions manual. I received the logger 3 days after the auction ended – this guy is fast. The whole thing cost me $139.98 shipped. If you don’t need the color screen he sells a normal logger for $79.98.

PC-Palm connection: Awesome simply put the Palm on the dock, hook up the serial adapter to the computer and pop in the CD. There is also a post on here somewhere that has a really cool link. It’s a program that takes your logs and turns them into excel format. From there you can make graphs and see each value you logged second by second.

Palm-Car connection: The cable that comes with this package is very simple to use, plug one end into the serial cable that comes form the dock and the other end into the diagnostics port. The instructions are very clear took me 30 seconds to install.

Logging Program: Comes with MMCD. IMO this is the best software out there for Palms. The features are endless including a CEL clear and diagnostics function, audible alarms, real time graphing and more. Check the link for all the info.

The Ebay Cable: I also got a NIFTY CABLE form Ebay that not only charges the Palm while your in your car but also makes it so you don’t have to use the docking station in your car. Got it for 15.99 shipped. Very cool. Again, check the link for full details.

Where I placed it: I found an awesome place for my palm between the shifter and the radio. There is a little compartment that normally fits coins but also fits the logger perfectly and is easily viewable from anywhere in the car. The pic in my gallery says it all.

Bottom Line: Very impressive package, everything you need to start logging and more. I suggest everyone who doesn’t have a means of logging get one of these right away. You don’t have to get the color one like I did but at least get the normal one so you can see what’s going on in your car. For $80 its worth it.

I got my palm/cable on ebay as well, but I needed to buy the ODBII connector online. Running Palm'n Stein I've never had a problem. It ended up costing about $100 all said and done with my palm m105 about a year ago.

i noticed you have both a datalogger and a safc2, would you say that the datalogger can control your air fuel ratio without the safc2, im just wondering if i would need to get the safc2 with my setup that i want to run, (basically intake, maf/maft, exaust, fmic, act 2100, and fuel pump)

Ok let me clear things up for you.

A DATA LOGGER IS NOT A TUNING DEVICE, IT IS A WAY TO VIEW YOUR ENGINE'S PARAMATERS.

A datalogger is any device that hooks up to your ecu in order to tell you what the ecu is seeing. The datalogger I have is a pocket PC however you can also use a laptop to datalog. The purplose of logging is to view and record your cars paramaters so you can tune your car better and make sure you dont blow it up in the process.

As for my my tuning device i am using an SAFC blue screen not an SAFC 2. Only a small differnce but whatever... Anyway, it allows me to fake the ecu into thinking its seeing more/less air than is actually going into the engine. This makes the car run much better and therefore adds more horsepower as you smooth out your a/f ratio.

Do some searching before you do anything else. this forum has some very good posts on tuning and logging.

sorry, i didnt know because i am a newb, no joke, ive owned my car for probably a month and a half, and most of my friends dont own/know the importance of a piston to their cars....im sorry if my ignorance aggrivated you, thanks for the good review and the response..

edit: btw i just realised i probably didnt make this clear in the first post, but i would use the maf/maft to tune, and i was wondering if that would be good enof, just the datalogger and the maf/maft, or would i need a safc/safc2 to tune....like i said my needs will probably be very simple...

I clicked on his other items he's selling, and really debating weather or not to just go ahead and buy the same package you got, or cheap out and go for the black and white. Do you use the Palm for anything else? Color screen worth it?

i parted my logger, spend like 20 for the palm 40 for the cable. very happy with it..kinda hoped that the MMCD software can show u when a check engine light comes on...or i'm blind

Personally I only use my logger for two things: Logging and Games. There are some fricken awesome games out there for the Palm IIIC if you google it. The color is worth it even if your only interested in logging simply because of the kick a$$ graphs it spits out while logging.

As for accessing the CEL diagnostic tool, I myself had trouble finding it. Open up MMCD and you should see the the names of the logs youve already done. At the top it says MMCD. Click on it and it will give you a sub menu - it should be in there. You can also access another similar menus in the logging screen.

my car is nearly stock, not even an exhaust. would a logger even be of benefit to me at this point?

like i could get one,it may tell me things are fine or their not..but either way it wont matter cause I can't change anything.

What do you recomend?

I got the same package thanks to the review, its kick a** i thought i was going to half to buy a ISC or TPS because of my idle surge turns out durring the surging the ISC was at lke 10.1 % and the TPS was just chillen at 0.0%(during idle) so i checked the engine light codes, and it threw a code 43(EGR) so i guess its my EGR causing the surge thanks MMCD hehe anyway i hope dsm tuners will help with the EGR but get this package it rocks only problem was the styalis(pen thingy) was white and didnt match the PDA(Big deal ) hope this helps

i bought it and id have to say im pretty happy, except with two things

1.when i got the palm the screen had a small crack on it,

2.this actually has nothing to do with the product, mmcd only lets you store 9 logs, and i dont like that, although im sure theres some way or program that you can use with this product that will allow you to store more....
