So I thought I would do my dad a favor and change the oil in his truck (02 dodge dakota 3.9) for him because it was overdue. I put 10w-30 quaker oil in it, and used a purolator filter. Everything seemed to go smooth. Filled it up with 4qts of oil (had advance auto look it up in there computer), and fired it up. It started up fine, but then after a few seconds there was a slight knocking noise that started. It does have higher oil pressure than before, but I'm guessing it's just from the fresh oil (at least thats how my car reacts). If you rev it up, it doesn't get louder, but faster. Then after about 1800-2000rpms it seems to go away. I was scared to drive it earlier but worked up enough gut to take it around and get it up to temp and see if the noise would fade. Once it got up to temp, the noise was practically gone, but you could still hear it if you really tried. I let the truck cool and started it back up cold, and the noise was back but still very faint. Is this anything to worry about? The truck does have about 95k miles on it. I hope to god it didn't just spin a bearing from changing the oil. Being that my engine is currently being rebuilt in my car and his truck is the only way to and from his job, and currently my classes and job.

You didn't try to flush it with water did you?

I'm not sure if those are pushrod motors or not but hey you still could still have a stuck lifter.

Did you put synthetic in it?

Nope, standard grade 10w-30 quaker. The lady at advanced looked it up and it was 4 qts. And When I checked the dipstick, it was right on the money.

Just drive it and see what happens. If it is an internal problem such as a bearing it will get worse. We have a 2.2 Sonoma which we have had since 40k miles and it now has 110k miles and it has been making a very noticable knocking noise all that time.....I have yet to figure out what it is, but i know its nothing serious.

Started it up this morning and the sound was non existent. Maybe it was a stuck lifter or something?

Had a pushrod Ford that did the same thing, or at least similar to what you are describing. I changed the oil (and found a moth) and it did the same little knocking/tapping noise. I marvel mystery oiled the chambers and (after smoking like a mother) it went away. Lifters are a good bet.
