Now if only someone would actually manufacture a dash with molded in 60mm pods for a 1G.

Do what everyone else on here does and build one. Sure it takes a shyt load of time, but it looks awesome and is even cheaper!

now if I could only figure out how to mount a 6 inch in the middle of the dash for my upcoming 5.1 system... Unfortunately I think it is going to wind up being a pod b/c of the stuff under the center of the dash.

DSMNate - I saw on your cloud9 customs site that you had the pods made before they were ont he dash.

Did you....

1> construct them out of fiberglass, and then set them in the desired position, bondo them in place, sand smooth and prime?

Or...

2> did you construct them, lay fiberglass cloth over the WHOLE dash, then sand and prime?

Some of us don't have nearly the amount of free time it would require. I'm in the Marine Corps, been in Iraq for most of the last 2 years, fabbing up anything myself is out of the question.

I would possibly be willing to manufacture one if the price is right. :D
What would you be willing to pay for one?

I actually have a spare 2g dash that I was thinking of fiberglassing and actually tabulating the hours it took and then selling it. But I want to see how mine holds up for a little so that I'm sure I can sell a quality product.

If there would be alot of interest in this kind of thing I could start doing it for people but I would need to find some more spare dashes besides the one 2g dash that I have. Or else people would have to be willing to have down time on their car while they ship me the dash, i fiberglass and paint it, and then ship it back to them.

Well kind of a mixture of both. I did previously construct the pods to sit on top of the stock dash and ran the car like that all last summer. This past winter I decided I was going to take out the whole interior and paint and fiberglass all of it. So I decided that if I was fiberglassing the dash I might as well mold the gauge pod in to it.

I basically took the pod that I had previously constructed and hacked it up with a dremel so that all that was left was the pod part rather than all the contoured parts it had when it sat on top of the stock dash. I fiberglassed the dash and then molded the gauge pod to the dash with Fiberglass Resin Jelly. Then sanded the molding smooth, wet sanded the entire dash, and put on several coats of primer. I wetsanded again and painted part of it black and tomorrow I will be painting the rest of it the silver that is on the bottom of my car.

I hope to have it completly painted and in the car tomorrow so I will take some more pictures and post them on Monday or Tuesday.

Well guys....yesterady my slave cylindar on my clutch went out. So while I'm waiting for the part to come in I have a little down time. So....I gutted the interior. I'm thinking about fabbing part of the dash...but I'm not sure what for. I was thinking of custom mounting my turbo timer but I'm still not sure.

Probably not even $25 to resin the dash. just depends how much resin you use. I wouldnt be surprised if one of those little bottles that comes in the bondo finerglass kits is more than enough resin to do the dash.

umm.. ive been reading most of these posts... and none of you are actually using fiberglass... yeah you could use some (just resin) but its not strong enough to with stand a small impact. it will spider crack with out fiberglass... just a little tip.. spend a little more cash and get some cloth (some what hard to work with) or Mat which i think is easy to use

I know that, he specifically asked how much it would be to "resin" the dash. All i do is work with fiberglass and carbon fiber. This is something I just started working on.

Very impressive job!!! I think those pods molded in the dash looks absolutely great!! Awesome.

In my opinion (to the others that ask..or care even) if you really want something that will last for a long time I would use cloth or matt, resin by itself will definitely crack if someone puts pressure on the dash top.

I am currently working on a dash for a customer that has 2 tv screens. One will be molded right off to the side of the driver's dashtop area and of course the other will be in front of the passenger airbag area. Making it in fiberglass is easy, BUT DAMN, carbon fiber is really tricky when you start getting a lot of humps, angles and corners. What a fun project so far. Probally the most complicated dash I have done so far.

Hey, definitely post pictures when that is done! I think it is going to turn out awesome as long as you paint it well. :)

Nice little project you got going on the bOOstd. Man, it would be really easy for you to make that a fiberglass replacement!! Part growth would be minimal. Wax the hell out of the stock part first. Are you just going to glass it over or pull it off and use it as a replacement?
When I made my first set of those the corners and tab sections was the hardest part. I took an extra set of surrounds and cut the sharp angle and corner sections out and clamped them behind the carbon and the mold. A compression type process if you will.
Sorry to jack the thread, my apologies.

I have used cloth on parts of the dash where it cracked after drying. I have had it out and sitting around for a few months and have been handling it and stuff as well as light impacts. I put a pretty thick layer of resin on the parts of the dash that didn't actually get cloth and it seems to be holding up fine. I guess the real test will be once it is in the car but I certainly hope nothing will be "impacting" my dash even on a small level.

I still have to respray the black and then clear the whole dash.

Here's some of my other interior parts...

those parts look nice. I hope mine come out looking like that.

Did you just resin over all those plastic parts as well, or did you apply a layer of fiberglass cloth as well?

I sanded most of the texture off of the plastic parts and then used a high build primer, wet sanded smooth, and painted.

Do you work at a stereo store or something like that? My fiance is just graduating from College in Reading so I know the area a little bit.
