Hey guys, I was just wondering if I would need to convert from obd2 to obd1 to pass the 300 whp mark in a 96+ 4g63t dsm. I've always heard obd1 is "easier" and "better", but am just wanting to make sure.

What all can be used for the obd2 cars to tune past the 300hp mark other than an afc hack?

No, the OBD version has nothing to do with horsepower and very little to do with actual tuning. Yes, there are a few tuning options that are only available for the 1g ECU. But its because the ECU is different overall, not just the diagnostics system. So the whole ECU has to swapped, not just the OBD system. And even if you went to a 1g ECU, I can only think of a few powerful tuning systems, all of which are very complex compared to newer systems like DSMLink.

So stick to the 2g ECU. DSMLink and Flashable ECUs are both easy to install and capable of much more than 300hp. I would highly suggest DSMLink since its beginner friendly, powerful, and widely used.

I can't see why there would be any advantage by using OBD1... All I can think of is disadvantages such as having to get adapters for even basic scanners, lack of detail, and slower than a slug in a tar pit. If you are going to switch the ecu, why wouldn't you upgrade to a flash ecu?? I don't get the logic behind taking a step backwards at all...

DSM's are not honda's, we have plenty of tuning options no need to swap to obd 1.

So with DSMLink I would keep the oem obd2 ecu so I can pass ispection? (they plug a state inspection computer into the obd2 plug during inspections on 96+ cars here)

Yes. DSMLink is a chip that is installed in the ECU so that you can use the OBD2 port for tuning. In most case it makes passing emissions easier.

I just read that you need a 95 eprom (obd1) ecu to use dsmlink.

Can I use dsmlink with a 96+ ecu or only the 95 ecu?

What is the best way to tune a 96+ eclipse while keeping the obd2 ecu in the car?

If you dont have a 95 eprom ECU ECMtuning can convert 1995-1997 non eprom ecu.

ECMlink or if you have a 98-99 black ECU they are flashable.

Oh, I thought 95 and older were obd1 and 96 and newer were obd2....
