I am currently doint a stock rebuild with the 1g rods and 2g pistons. I have searched and looked around but I am not finding my answer. What kind of rings is everyone using. I see alot of people use the stock or chrome rings. The stock will get the job done, but are not the most reliable. The chrome are just plain junk. I am looking for some moly rings, they seat better and last longer but can't seem to find any. Does anybody know where I could get some, and also what are some of you other people using for rings. Thanks for your time.

If your not going to get the cylinder bores bored or honed then I would suggest just using steel or iron rings. Chrome rings are good for dirty environments such sandy beaches and stuff. Talk to speed pro or total seal, im pretty sure they have plasma moly rings. Now if you are really bent on getting some plasma moly rings then youll probably need to machine/hone the cylinder bores to a certain RA or surface finish depending on what the ring manufacturer recommends.
 
I'm still curious why people still do the 2G pistons on 1G rods. You can buy a set of Wiseco forged pistons and rings for around $400. Last I checked for a set of 2G pistons and rings it was around $325 plus around $50 to get them machined for 1G rods.

Of course, if you got the pistons cheap or already have them then by all means go for it. If I was using stock pistons I would just use stock pistons rings. They seem to be the best for any job your going to do with stock pistons. I've never had any troubles with them.
 
I would use the stock rings with the stock pistons. I agree if your not going to get the blocked honed in anyway I would just go with what was used in the motor. You will really see no performance diffrence with diffrent ring brands. Put new stockers in from the dealer for those pistons and you wont have any problems. Keep it simple. The more you complecate things the more likely you will have a problem.
I would at least "ball" hone it if I were to install new stock rings to take the glaze of the cylinder wall and get a better seal from the new rings once they are broken in.
Guys are running the 2G pistons because they last longer in a everyday street motor that will see lots of miles and no engine internal inspection.
Forged pistons need HOT running clearance and scuff the cylinder walls more when cold than the cast 2G pistons. Forged piston motors use alittle motor oil also than cast pistons because of the added piston to cylinder wall clearance and ring gap is larger as well but it really isnt a big deal. I am running forged internals daily but at 40k the motor is coming apart anyway for inspection. All in all if you want a 75k+ mile motor than go with 2G pistons and stock rings.
There are many guys running 2g pistons on 11 second cars with no problems the forged pistons are just added insurance. All depends on your goals I guess Just my .02
 
Well the reason I'm going with the 2g pistons and 1g rods, it because I'm taking a maching class right now, so I am going to line bore the mains, bore and hone, deck the block and head, all new valves/guides, and machine the rods, and make them fit the pistons all for FREE, so thats why I don't want to spend the extra money on forged if the stock will get me to same spot. I would like to put moly rings on it because if in case I ever do decide to through something big at it, I know the block/bottom end will last. But your idea's are right. So what kind of rings are you using?
 
I am using the ross rings that came with the pistons. Top ring is moly coated ductile graphite iron. Second ring is zinc coated cast iron. Stick with the factory stock rings on factory pistons. You can go with others sure but I dont have expereance with the factory piston use. Im sure the factory pisotns have some kind of coating on them but not sure what type. You can also get aftermaker coatings put on the rings if you what as well. I would use swain tec coatings. www.swaintech.com
