I have read the VFAQ on Mopar Combustion Chamber Cleaner and am about to start looking for it or a similar product. My car has been running EXTREMELY rich for about 4 months and I was considering cleaning the chambers out once I get a nice tune.... a recent removal of the plugs showed me some pretty dirty pistons :(

I was thinking it might be a good idea to take it easy for a while though, maybe 1000km's... removing the carbon from the cylinder is going to change the way the rings seal and it would be sensible to give them time to re-seal sorta.... what do you think?

Anyone had experience with these products with anything to add over and above the VFAQ?

Thanks

Astaroth.

I have done this before. There is NO reason to take it easy. It revoved the carbon crowns from the TOPS of the pistons. The ring will most likely have nothing on them becasue there is very little clearence on the side of the pistons. The are a pretty close fit.

Spray a can down the cylinders and let it sit over night. Suck what you can out the next day, put an old set of plugs in or run the ones you have but you will need new ones. Start the car up, let it smoke for awhile and when the smoke is all done, change the plugs AND oil.

BG Products makes some very good engine cleaner. They have several different products you can use, it all depends on how deep you want to go. They have a can of spray, a can that you dump in the gas tank, and a can that gets fed directly into your fuel system. The last one requires a shop to do it for you, as it takes a special tool. They are a little pricey, but I have used them all before and they all work great. In fact, I haven't been dissapointed with anything of theirs...... :thumb:

BG products are very expensive, GM sells their 3-part kit for $45. I have used a product from GM called Top Engine Cleaner, I think it sells for about $5. I just pull a manifold vacuum hose, suck the can through the intake until the it's empty and after letting it sit in the car for 20 minutes or so, take a nice spirited drive to burn up the fluid. That's what the GM techs did when I worked at a dealership.

How does seafoam compare to the MCCC? I'm going to do something to clean the engine out a bit soon, but I don't know what's the best way to do it.

I did the combustion chamber cleaning earlier today using the aerosol Mopar Combustion Chamber Conditioner. First disconnected the BOV vacuum hose from the intake manifold then connected a ¼”x10’ hose to the BOV inlet on the intake manifold. Sitting in the driver’s seat and keeping the revs at around 2000 RPM shot the conditioner into the hose at 2 second spray 5 second stop intervals to avoid hydro lock. After using half the bottle turned the car off and let it sit for an hour and a half. When I turned the car on after this period the thick white smoke cloud began. I continued spraying as before till I almost finished the can and then took the car for a “spritted” drive. Maybe 15 seconds after beginning driving the smoke discontinued. Came back and changed the plugs. They looked normal to me. No abnormal gunk or carbon deposits. A few hours later just for the hell of it I decided to use up what was left in the can. No smoke. Took it for a drive anyways. I guess the combustion chambers were clean by now. Then I changed the oil. Also the engine light came up but that was cured by cycling the battery power.

I didn’t feel any difference in engine performance at all. I guess the previous owner took good care of the car.
