clutch slips in higher gears only

i can theorize:

Basically while the numerically lower gears do make more torque, this isnt seen at the engine rotating assembly because this is generate after the gearbox. BUT the higher numerical gear indicate a higher speed, which creates more load on the engine which IS seen at the rotating assembly. This is also why you tend to make more boost and sooner in the higher gears.

Also, if you're still in the "saving up" stage.....you might (if it hasn't gone on for long) be able to adjust the clutch pedal to get a touch more life out of the clutch until you get all the funds together.

It all depends on where it was adjusted to the last time the clutch was changed, but it could give you a couple of extra weeks worth of operation if you're easy on it.
