I have been reading up on the cas adjustment but on my 1997 gst I dont see how its adjustable. someone please explain.

Thanks, and should there be oil in the housing of the cas or did i miss a gasket somewhere

:D I wont say anything THIS time Bruce, but next time you leave yourself that open, you're gettin' razzed.

Oil is normal inside the CAS.

Still no code reader. Im out of ideas, compression is fine, plugs aqnd wires are fine and boost leak is fine. Still revs to 2500 and drops to 500 and then stalls out. Restart the car and it does it again and after it revs up like that for a while it goes away but still sputters at idle with no power when driving. Could timing being off one tooth cause this?

I'm lost. Your first and last post are totally in different realms. What is going on and when is it going on? Give me some specifics. The timing belt being off a tooth does not come and go. I need a computer scan for codes. This is vitally important for diagnostics. Post me some more information. Loss of power can be traced usually to but not exclusively to. Bad fuel pump, catalytic converter which can be intermittnet if you ever dealt with a loose stone inside of one. Fuel filter, timing etc. Are you knocking and having your timing retarded? More info please. Check these out and I'll check back later.

FYI.. most auto parts stores/shops offer low cost (even free) code reading for ODBII cars as you have. Can also pick one up preety cheeplyyourself or purchase a datalogger (which all modded DSM owners should have) which will also read codes. There is even a Tech Article here on Tuners that can help without any of the above :D

FYI.. the poor idle condition coudl be anything from an intake leak (pre/post turbo), exhaust leak, to the all to common bad ISC (tends to gum up with deposits preventing the needle to properly operate) :dsm:

Logger came today threw codes po196,po400 and po3ff. I did a searcha nd people have listed this same problem but not what fixed it. Car idles really rough and often dies. Idle revs up to 2500 and then drops to 500 and usually stalls. BUt if you can keep it running long enough it will hold idle at 750 after 5 minutes or so but is still really sputtery and rough. POwer is not up to normal. I had a head rebuilt off of a 95 talon turbo for this 97 gst, could this have someting to do with it?

Did the car run well at any time after the new head was installed?

Some things to check:
- Ensure all TBelt timing marks are correctly aligned
- Compression test
- Boost leak test
- Remove and clean ISC valve
- Remove and clean EGR valve/replace (or just block off) - the EGR should only open during vacume. It's possible this valve is leaking - Code PO400 is EGR.
- Check/adjust base Idle via BISS screw
- Replace fuel filter if of unknown age/condition

Start checking te above and if ok cross out and move onto the next :dsm:
