So I pulled the head off today due to some bent valves. When I lgot it off I saw the pistons had A LOT of carbon deposits on them. Any idea what could cause this? Could it maybe be from detonation or lean fuel mixture?

Post some pictures. From what your saying it sounds normal. But its hard to say without pictures. Post pictures and I can tell you right away.

Carbon is mormal. Excessive carbon is more likely from running excessively rich.

Lemme put it this way before I take some pics. The entire surface of each piston is pretty much caked with carbon. The surfaces are just black and it's kinda thick. Guess that's what I get for allowing a V-8 guy to mess with my car.

that tells me that it is just running really rich. if was detonating it would be running lean and would not be, "caked" with carbon as you put it. you should be fine but pics would help out.
