Appendix "K" of the California Smog Check Inspection Manual states installing an intercooler is allowed with out ARB approval. Basically it reduces Nox emissions by cooing intake air. However, I think this is discussing adding one to a vehicle that doesn't have one. It doesn't indicate front mount or side mount. I would think changing an existing configuration would be allowed.

There is also a Catagory II (those are I and III).
Also not of any interest to smog techs are intake manifolds, provided they retain all the normal emissions and vacuum lines.

And while this all might look awesome this is still not a perfect solution. Many people are getting passed with the SSAC kit, but there are also many smog techs out there that would fail use because the uicp is metal and not plastic/stock.
But then again, how can the FMIC be legal if its piping is not?
That would be the same as failing for water injection (which is legal) because you has lines hooked up to the WI nozzle that lead to the trunk.

See what I mean? It's still kinda messed up.

I got my information from scouring the intraweb and other forums.

So, the bottom line of this post is that you can still fail for having a FMIC.
I think I might have to call a tech (that I would use) and just straight up ask him.

This is really making it a hard choice between the SSAC kit and Supra SMIC ...arg.

Just paint your intercooler pipes. I have the SSAC kit, with black pipes. But that doesn't really help since the engine bay screams modified, its too clean and shiny for a 95 engine bay. Keep everything dirty and dusty and grimey looking, thats another way to pass visual. :)

The shop that wouldn't smog the Mits valve cover just wants to stay in business. Besides putting up with us, the State runs sting cars that routinely hit the smog shops to see if they'll get a pass. That shop or the mechanic may have been hit before.

I passed with flying colors that that SAME smog place a few days before with a chromed out Mitsubishi valve cover, Thermal 3" Turbo back exhaust, Dejon tool UICP for Blow thru, GM-MAF Translator in Blow-thru, 3" intake pipe and K&N air filter on it, No Stock airbox or stock MAF, MBC, Walbro 255HP FP, SBR cast manifold with external wastegate, Greddy EGT probe on the SBR manifold, Greddy Electronic boost gauge with the sensor t-tapped into the fuel pressure solenoid line, and 2 Greddy gauges in my a-pillar pod.

a few questions about picking the proper smog legal parts:

1) K&N FIPK for 2G-T cars are carb excempt. Do you get a sticker with the CARB number with it? If you have to show an officier, how do you explain that this giant filter is legal?

2) Do I have to paint a FMIC black or not.. because this thread

http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=254459
seemed to conclude FMIC it is legal for factory intercooled cars.

(But then a shiny FMIC doesn't stop the police from popping your hood though, it's still up to us to proof it to the state ref?)

3) can I use any UIC pipe as long as it's got a non-adjustable BOV in it? Does the greddy UIC pipe have CARB excempt status, if so why would they do that?

1. the K&N comes with a sticker with it's EO number, I just stuck it on my MAS so the ref can see it plain and simple.

2. I have a shiny Greddy front mount - had to smog my car a week ago and the ref didn't say anything at all...

3. I have shiny red Dejon pipes and a Greddy RS BOV - and the ref didn't even bat an eye.

I might just of been lucky, and I always smog my car at the same place. The refs are always on the lookout for stings, and if you're a repeat customer he'll gradually learn to trust you.

just my $.02 :thumb:

Again, Appendix K of the California Smog Check Inspection Manual states ARB Executive Orders (EO) are not needed for intercoolers. There are allot of unnecessary EOs out there, even for cow magnets that are said to give you better gas mileage.

:beatentodeath:

Come on people!!! Lets keep this thread a rolling. I got a state ref ticket today. So I want to know all my options to spend as little money as possible.

I'll start up a new thread about what I MUST do to pass the Ref with pictures and everything. (I will not be a guinea pig as of "lets see if this works". Rather Just a "How To" on what is NEEDED and all the steps I go through to pass this in LA California).

So please keep this going. Knowledge is power!!!! :p

What did you get a ref ticket for?

On the ticket it says "Modified Smog Device". They only got me on three things. The AFC (And it amazed me on how the heck he found where it was hiding), the intake because it is an open element (and the piping to the turbo isn't stock. Didn't have a C.A.R.B. sticker for it), and my cat back exhaust. I got lucky that these fellows were lazy and didn't feel like getting on their knees to check to see how large the rest of my exhaust was :shhh:.

Everything is up to date in my profile. I need to put up a current picture of my engine bay. It's all the same parts really. Just everything that was blue is now flat black (including the Type-S) and the shinny intake is also flat black.

Please keep this thread to its topic: CARB Numbers.

If you'd like to start a "Hare-Brained Ideas For Escaping Smog Check Realities" thread, do so in the Hangout.

Those of you not in California, and not living under these regulations, be advised We Know. And we don't need to hear any more about it from you.
