Recently my 98 GSX has started sputtering under boost I first noticed it happening on 50% throttle between 3k-5k rpms. Now it seems to be all the time, the turbo has maybe 10k miles on it and my boost gauge shows normal boost. I have tried putting my AFC back to +/- 0 and still nothing. Is there a chance it heavy shaft play, and how can I check/repair this? Thanks.

You need to get the feeler gauges. Let me see if I can find a picture for you....

It's the one on top. I got mine at Advanced Auto.

Feeler gauges found at NAPA:

I bought one not too long ago, and I don't much like it. I end up sticking with the trusty 'ol wire gauge.

I was told that the EKNs are to only ones that will really work.

If you went to an auto parts store or the dealership, in most cases the only NGK spark plug option (aside from platinum or iridium plugs) that will appear in the computer for our cars will be the EKN, since it was the "factory" plug. I feel confident saying that the majority of DSM'ers here run some version of the ES plug, be that a BPR6ES, 7ES, etc. You can use the EKN, don't get me wrong. Plenty of people do without a problem. But just so you know next time, you have a few options available.
