OK i got my new intake manifold gasket in, new injector seals, new intake mani, and everything got cleaned to perfect prior to replacing. Now the car idles and it runs fine but when i get to about half throttle i can hear something that is ticking... it starts at like half throttle and continues the whole way up to WOT without stopping. I opened the engine bay and revved the engine and it didnt seem to be coming from the engine itself but i couldn't figure out exactly where? Im wandering if it could possible be the IAC valve because when i took it out to clean it the plunger came off so i just threaded it back on. Thanks for any help

Wander over to Autozone and pick up a new PCV if you didn't replace that while doing all the rest of it. Now, if you removed and borked your IAC, you'd likely have idle issues, but I highly doubt the ticking noise.

Double check the areas around the belts for any zip ties, splash guards, or the like which might be coming into contact with a moving part in the engine bay (belt/pulley). Then again, double check your splash guards to be sure they're not flapping back into the tires at speed.

When you hear a noise while in motion:
-Put the clutch in and coast, this will tell you if the noise is related to the powertrain or the chassis.
-If the noise is still there when coasting, try to determine if it's related to engine speed by lightly giving the engine a rev. If the noise doesn't speed up with the engine, then it's something like a wheel, brake, or maybe something dragging under the car.

Hope this helps.

I had the same problem, I'm pretty sure your engine is in good condition. The problem with my 2g was some valves that needed to be replaced and some piston rings.
Make sure your not low on oil, because the problem in mine was just like yours, with that ticking noise constantly. Check the oil, and if your friends with a mechanic, ask him if you can use that thing that looks like stethescope so you can check if its a valve and if its coming from a piston.

good luck

Im really leaning toward the IAC because before when i started having my idle problems i took off only the throttle body and cleaned it and the IAC and when i put it back on the car made the ticking... the plunger fell out of the IAC when i was cleaning it and i wasn't sure how it went back together so i just kind of threaded it back in. Im going to have to pick one of those up soon and put it in and see if it stops the ticking LOL.

Are you sure that the ticking isn't coming from the valve cover? the valves in the 420A like to get noisy, especially around time for an oil change...

You said that you're pretty sure that the noise isn't coming from the engine? around where is it coming from then? Make sure that there isn't anything moving around that could be hitting/"tapping" on anything. My buddy installed a CAI in his Aveo (rofl) and it had no brace, so it likes to flop around his engine bay. It successfully rubbed against his A/C's low pressure hose long enough to make his A/C not work.

It's possible that the IAC pintle is misaligned. I've done extensive work with these units before, and they definitely tick if they're not calibrated properly. I don't know if the stock ECU has provisions to reset the IAC, but I would hope that it does. Try threading the pintle as far in as possible first. Then you might resort to buying a new one, or sending me the old one to reset.

Try Drigg's suggestions first, though. Let us know what happens.
