I have a 98 GST with an automatic transmission. The car can be driven forward but not in reverse. So, I figured the issue was one of the usual culprits like a faulty valve body, a bad solenoid, or a defective front clutch. Long story short, I decided to start using the car for parts. Tonight, I began tearing apart the front suspension so I could remove the axles and prepare to pull the engine. When I started dismantling the driver's side suspension, I noticed that the CV shaft was torn out of the boot near the transmission. Can a broken axle allow a car to drive forward but not backwards? Has anyone experienced a no reverse issue caused by a broken axle while still being able to drive the car forward? Any input would be helpful. Thanks!

With all the stuff I have broken over the years I have personally never experienced this one. I would say that it's highly highly unlikely that's a broken cv axle would be the cause for no reverse. Did it make any usual noises while attempting to use reverse . Or nothing at all?

A broken axle will cause the vehicle not to be moved forward or reverse, almost feels like a slipping clutch in an open diff setup. With a welded diff the car can drive with one axle. Obviously thats manual but the clutches and axles still apply But wouldn't cause what your situation is. It sounds like the reverse valve in the valve body is stuck

Thank you for the replies. The reason I brought this up is because the previous owner had reverse go out on him with no warning. When I first saw the broken axle, my first thought was that this could be the issue with reverse. I'm thinking that it could be possible that the passenger side axle (unbroken side) might be turning when the car is in drive. When the car is in reverse, the driver side may be turning instead of the passenger side. Since the axle is broken on the driver side, that would explain the no reverse issue if this is indeed the case. Unfortunately, I no longer can test it out because I've remove the engine from the car. Basically, I wanted to find out if anyone experienced a similar problem from a broken axle so I could get an idea of whether the transmission is still good. Oh well :(

There was no noise when I shifted it into reverse. There wasn't even a jolt.
