Im preparing to buy a Talon Tsi, and the guy says that there was a cambelt break, which led to 12 valves to be bent. He says that nothing else was damaged. I havent been able to see the car in person because the car is 40 minutes away, and I was wondering if someoen could help me out with some info.

1)If the cambelt were to break, what else would have most likely be damaged if 12 of the valves were bent?

2)What would the cost of fixing the bent valves be(ballpark estimate)?

3)Would it be too risky to buy the car, since it is not running and I cant find out all of its problems until I buy it?

he said that it was just the valves, now did he take the block apart? it could be alot more than just valves. i mean it could be alot i would suggest to do a search on timing belts

The guy is suggesting he will fix the car within the week if i dont buy it, but Im not sure if thats a ploy to pressure into getting it. In the worst case scenario(with possible piston damage), what do you think the cost would be to fix everything in a machine shop? I never had an engine problem before, so I dont have a clue

Edit- Also beside the pistons and valves, could anything else been damaged as well? Thanks a lot for the help, I greatly appreciate it :)

Pistons and valves are about the worst damage Ive seen with a tb break. I honestly wouldnt give more than $500 if it doesnt run. Maybe $700 if it is in pristine condition. I payed $800 for my 92 with 6bolt/4bolt, 96k miles, and a broken timing belt.

Thats normally the worst of it (valve and piston damage). As far as cost of repair. It all depends on your machinist, and your access to parts. New vs used. (ie. good friends for stock repair) If he is claiming he will fix it. Ask him how much he is selling it for once repaired. It may turn out to be a better deal. If he doesn't want to work with you. Tell him you will look elsewhere.

Ahh great timing, the guy emailed me and said that he would sell it for $2000 after he repairs it. I'll give you guys some details of the car...

Eagle Talon TSI AWD Turbo. Good condition for year. Gray unmarked leather interior. Cam belt went so 12 damaged valves only to replace.valves on Ebay for $130.Estimated for parts $200. Easy repair for enthusiast or mechanic. New belt included. Some work done already. Small dent in drivers'wing but easy to repair. Updated A/C to 134a so filling is cheap, All seals renewed. 4 very good P8000's tires. Smogged 02/11/05, 19 months left. Rare car to find and priced for quick sale. Buyer to tow away or use AAA. Sold as is without guarantee but worked great before belt broke! $1000 best, worth alot more when head is repaired. Turbo and Ecu replaced 2 years ago.

Im not concerned about the comsmetic damage(the small dent) as it wouldn't cost much money to fix or replace, and he has an extra belt to replace the broken timing belt. Replacing ecu and turbo convinced me that this guy knows what he is doing, Im just worried hes might not be telling me everything, or he doesnt know if theres piston damage or not. Im not very educated in the valvetrain, so this is all sort of confusing to me. I'll take a look at it tommorow or the next day and take some pictures so you guys can help me out better. When taking the pictures, is the piston damage easy to spot, like an abrasion to the top of it? Thanks for the help. :)

Wish him well, walk away, and keep looking. They aren't that damned rare.

Paying more for a better car is always cheaper.
