my 98 gsx cam censor is leaking oil i went to take it off and there was an o ring i need to replace, but i could not even pry it off and do not want to hurt anything does anyone know why it will not come off?

Two factors heat and age. Try and see if you can use a small screwdriver to break the o-ring.

My car is a 97 and I have the same sensor as you. Start by unplugging your CAS. Should be a 3 wire harness. There is 1 10mm bolt holding the black sensor inside the housing. Gently pull it out and there should be a magnetic black cylinder on the end with a small o-ring closer to the bolt hole for that 10mm bolt you just removed. If that's not leaking then its the sensor housing itself that's leaking. Remove the 2 12mm bolts on the housing, 1 is under the CAS and the other is straight across on the rad cap side. Pull the housing out and CLEAN the mating surfaces to the head and the housing and use some RTV to seal it back up. You could do the same ting for the 3 10mm bolts holding the small outside plate on too. Just don't use too much RTV as it is not needed. I had to do my thermostat housing to my head the same way too because mitsu never made gaskets for these and they were RTV'd from the factory.

what i am having trouble with is i took all the bolts out and unplugged it but the housing with the 2 12mm is unbolted and stuck on there and i didn't want to pry to hard and break anything the o ring on that housing against the valve cover is leaking and i just don't know why it won't pop off like i figured it should

take off the three bolts on the cover of the sensor and you will see where it connects to your cam shaft. take off your valve cover as well and put a 17mm wrench(i believe) on the cam shaft just to make sure it doesnt spin will you torque down on the bolt that holds the sensor housing to the camshaft. once you remove the bolt from the cam shaft it will just come right out. then make sure you put some rtv on all the places where it could possibly leak oil

Ill post pictures for you in about 10 mins. I need to take my cam sensor cover off anyways because I'm gonna smooth it out and polish it.

You need to take off the 3 10mm bolts holding on the cap shown here.

Then you need to take off the 12mm bolt inside holding the tone wheel to the cam.

Then the 2 12 mm bolts holding the sensor housing to the head. One is located above the coolant filler neck and the other is located right next to the bottom bolt that held the cap on.

It's gonna take a little persuasion to get the actual sensor housing off. I recommend a couple soft taps with a rubber mallet or the rubber handle end of a pair of channel locks. Once you break the rtv seal it should pull right out. Hope this helps. If i had rtv I would have pulled it all the way off for you.
