I'm looking to buy a 1g DSM and this one popped up. I have not called the guy yet as i just found it late tonight. this is all it says...

'92 Mitsubishi Eclipse, JDM motor less then 45 thousand miles.New axels, new tires $2300.

Ive read here on the forums that the JDM motors do not come with the correct ECU. I'm still pretty new to DSM's and was wondering what was some of your experiences with the JDM motor and what to check for if there is something that could be up with it. thanks - Aaron

Which JDM engine is it? There is a JDM regular 4G63T and then there is a Cyclone. There are plenty of FAQ's on how the Cyclone is installed in a 1G also just keep googling.

I would advise against buying an Eclipse with a JDM motor swap.. I dont care if it has 45k on the clock.. In Japan you are required to change your engine at 60k so most owners do not take care of their motors not even change the oil in the mileage period.. Ive seen quite a number of DSM's here in NY that had a JDM motor swap in them that smoked so bad it was like a scene from Knight Rider.. If you are dead set on buying it then make sure you run a compression test on the motor, check for any leaks make sure the timing belt is up to par.. Stuff like that.. Good luck

This is absolutely wrong. Japanese are not required to replace engines at 60K. I have found most Japanese to be meticulous with maintenance. In Japan they have what it called the Shaken, it is basically a "road worthiness" test. It also comes with a hefty road tax based on engine displacement. The Shaken takes place three years from new, and then every two years. Every mechanical aspect of the car is inspected. If something is broken, you must pay to have it repaired. This includes strict emissions testing. The car must also be a stock ride height and most modifications must be removed.

The reason most Japanese engines have less than 60K is because driving is something best left at the bottom of the "to-do" list. Major cites can be a complete pain in the ass to get around in, let alone find a parking space within a couple blocks of where you are going. Since you can take a train just about anywhere, why drive? It's like owning a car in NYC or Manhattan except worse. Chances are if it is smoking, it has more to do with the fact that it has been sitting in a wrecking yard for 10 years and less to do with the original maintenance.

M3FSQ Just go check it out and see how she runs. I wouldn't be completely against a motor swapped car.
