so, i recently bought a 91 talon tsi with a bunch of stuff done to it. the engine is forged, it has cams, valve springs, revised lifters, arp hardware, etc... the engine has about 16k miles on it, and it runs great. so, i dont think i have much to worry about there.

however, the transmission isnt shifting all that great in 3rd. i did some diagnosis of the clutch to make sure its moving as far as it can. and it does appear to be doing just that... the fluid has about 1,000 miles on it and its a redline and synchromesh mix. it seems to be the transmission... so, basically now i'm trying to do some homework on which would be the best choice for my car.

its a daily driver, and its going to stay a daily driver. so, i would say its not going to see much more than 300-320awhp on 91 octane on a daily basis. but, i am also going to have an e85 tune where i look to max out my borg warner s258, which will be used occasionally. also, i want to be able to drag race the car also occasionally. what i'm looking for is reliability and shift quality... both of these companies seem to deliver in these departments. i just want the car to be all around reliable, and i know cutting corners on these cars will bite you in the ass if you do so.

the two builders that i've seen that have my attention so far are jacks transmissions and shepherd trans. i'm ready to drop about 3k or so on this... so, i want to be sure i make a good decision. which is why i'm posting this up. sorry for the long post... any useful input would be appreciated.

For starters, the Syncromesh/Redline mix definitely isn't helping. Check out Jacks oil recommendation thread for more info.

For which company, you can't go wrong with either one. But I would highly suggest Jack's based off my own positive experiences with them. The Stage 2.2 HD with 4-spider diff looks like it would be a good option for your needs.

unfortunately i bought the car with that oil in it. so, i guess i'll give it a shot to change it out. i kinda think the previous owners already did their number on this transmission. so, either way i'll probably go with the built option and use the correct oil this time and call it a day.

Jacks Transmissions and Sheptrans should have no problems doing the buildup for you.

For those power levels, you don't really NEED the 4-spider center differential unless you are going to be making more than 400TQ or severely abusing the car especially under hard turning acceleration. The Torrington bearing upgrade is an essential upgrade though.

Pretty much required parts are going to be:

*New synchros
*New 1/2 and 3/4 hub and slider assemblies (springs/keys/hub and sliders)
*Likely a new 3rd gear
*New 2nd gear
*New input shaft and intermediate shaft tapered roller bearings
*New needle bearings
*New seals/snaprings
*Center diff rebuild with machined cover, Torrington bearing, spider gear washers and upper/lower oiling shims.
*New 1/2 and 3/4 shift forks
*New 3/4 shift rail
*Front diff shims/washers and pin

Pretty much a Shep Stage #2 and something equivilant from Jack.

Since you are in a warmer climate, I would recommend one of the following gear oils:
*Redline MT85
*Redline MT90
*Redline 75w90NS
*Mitsubishi Diaqueen Evo 6-speed gear oil
