I got a 2.0 L N/T with 40K miles on it. I was reading the manual and it says to check/change the Manual Transaxle Oil and Transfer Oil. Is this a good idea at 40K miles? I don't think it has been done before so I would like to change them. I've never done this. I did some searches and could not find out how to change them. Questions:

1. Is the Manual Transaxle Oil the same as the clutch fluid?
2. I'm guessing I just drain it from underneath the car and then pour new oil under the clutch fluid cap. Is this correct?
3. How do I change the transfer oil and what is it used for?
4. What type of oil do I use for each? I heard Penzoil Synchromesh or BG Synchroshift... Is there a specific weight/thickness to use?

All help is appreciated.

OK changing the trans oil is very simple. You use eather Pens, BG syncromesh II or royal purple syncromesh. You will need I beleave 2 pints but just fill it enough untill it starts running out the fill plug (Its a big bolt twards the front of the car about half way up the trans you will see it) Also the drain bolt is on the botton of the trans and is also a big bolt. I filled mine using a funnel with a hose attached to it and inserted into the fill hole. Its easyer if you take the air filter assembly off and fill it from the top with the funnel. I recomend driving the car to get the oil hot and mixed up to get all the oil out because it will get thinner from heat so it will be easyer to drain. I have the BG syncromesh II and it made my trans shift like butter is AWSOME but costs 15.00 a pint. :thumb:

So what is the diff. between transfer oil and transaxle oil and how do I change the other?

Changing the transaxle fluid is one of the very few things I don't do myself. The dealer charges me $60 (3 quarts fluid @ $11/quart plus $27 labor). Personally, it's not worth the hassle of doing it myself.

A drain plug and a filler plug are too much hassle? er, okay.

If you get Pennzoil Synchromesh (as you should), it has no weight rating.

Also, get an owner's manual and a shop manual.

I have a manual and for the transmisson I use Lucas Synthetic 75w-90 and I haven't changed the clutch fluid yet. What is the best oil or fluid or whatever to use for the clutch.

Can you recommend a manual to get... Chilton, Haynes, or factory. Also, is there somewhere online I can download it, or a cheap place to buy it you know of.

I got my factory service manual on ebay cheep. I recomend the the factory manual over anything else. :thumb:

I'm going to change my manual transaxle fluid and would like to know what the best fluid to use is. I've heard good things about Pennzoil Synchromesh, BG Synchroshift, and BG Syncromesh II. Are there benefits of one over the other?

This is an excellent way to start a tranny fluid "holy war" :)

I swear by Redline Heavyweight Shockproof. Others swear at it. Same for pretty much any fluid. No consensus will be found :)
