I noticed Summit Racing or the JC Whitney catalog (Can't remember which) has the AEM in it for DSMs for $1500. I agree the AEM is a nice product. I currently run a VPC on my 1G, and I love it. I switched to the VPC from the SAFC/2GMAS/K&N FIPK combo last year. With the previous combo, my car was running high egt temps at the track and cruising. I played with the SAFC settings for months until my fingers hurt, and still could not fix it. Yes, I triple checked the wiring of the mas, swapped in another 2Gmas..etc. Maybe my problem was an isolated one with that combo. The best time I could get with the old set up was 13.87 at a trap speed of 105 @ 21 psi. A local older dsm guru encouraged me to go with the VPC set up (550chip). Making this the only swap (paid $850 from Bushur), I took the car to the track and ran a 13.0 @ 109 mph @ 19 PSI on the first run. The car was stumbling bad that day over 5500 rpm in every gear, later at home that night, I found the plugs were the cause. This was a great improvement with the same 60ft time (compared with the 2GMAS/SAFC combo) and egt temps were at 1400 compared to the 1625 with the old set up. Thats why I love the VPC, because I was able to see the difference on my timeslips and how friggen easy it is to use. I don't like the VPC prices though, this used to be a $600 product, until the demand for them prompted the price hike. I have yet to go back to the track since last summer, but I am confident I can break into the mid 12's (hoping) when I go back. The VPC is a proven product, but I am curious to see what the AEM can do on a DSM. :)

That is for the unit for the 2nd gen. I dont know when the 1g units will be available. Granted you need to either 1. understand the theory of how to tune a car yourself or 2. Pay someone to tune it. But I think it is a better value than a vpc, safc, tmo combo. Once it has been out for 6 or 8 month I am sure people will have a lot better idea of how to tune it.

I rechecked the catalog and it is a JC Whitneys. It does list the AEM 1G. It shows two different model, 1G & 2G. Give em call to see if its available.

the 1g's wont be out until August

for $1500, is the AEM a standalone?. I dont understand why you wouldnt go with a haltech instead of the AEM, it costs only about $1000, although its tough to install, its proven.

Im not trying to turn this into a big debate. I was just wondering why it SEEMS like nobody wants to deal with the haltech, when its 100% tuneable.

From what i've heard the AEM street version is more user friendly then the Haltech and it comes with the base settings. Also I don't know about the Haltech but you can use your stock sensors with the AEM street version. The AEM race version is not worth it since the Haltech can be had for about $500 less.

Can you tell me how to operate the knock control on your Haltech? Oh wait it doesn’t exist. How about a windows interface? Strong vendor support? I think the AEM has a lot of strong features that place it above the Haltech.

Also 1000 will not really get you the complete solution for either setup. There is always a lot of other sensors and various things that you will need with either.

Yeah, the AEM is alot more user friendly. I checked with AEM and the 1g unit will be out very late summer. Sounded like beginning of Sept. He said they weren't going to rush it and were having to deal with stuff on other units that were pushing back the time frame on the 1g. I am getting one as soon as they come out. The AEM unit can also tune itself if you use a wideband O2 sensor, lets see a haltech do that!

For a stand alone also throw some type of wideband o2 in there. Whether that means buying it yourself or paying a shop to use one on the dyno. Normally when tuning you set a conservative timing map, then adjust the injector pulsewidth to get the desired a/f ratio, THEN advance timing slowly until you get knock.
Standalones are not for everyone. It's not incredibly hard, but I would not say it is easy either. It takes time, but you HAVE to actually understand how a engine itself works. If you think "you shoot in fuel, valve opens, piston is coming up, valve closes, fire plug, open exhaust valve", well um you probably shouldn't get a stand alone yet.
