My daughter has a 1997 Eclipse GST that she reports suddenly the battery light is on, the brake light is on, ( I assume that it is on the dash somewhere) and the engine overheats...
Is it possible that a bolt is broken that drives the water pump and alternator? She also states that when she steps on the brake pedal, the brake light goes off..
Am I on the right track here,, not too familiar with these cars and I'm 1000 miles away from the car..
Thanks

The batt light is a altenator problem over heating could be a number of things, and the brake light could be a circuit or module problem. Its hard to tell what exactly is going wrong over the internet with that info. But I would recomend having the belts looked at, compression test, altenator load test, and brake light diag. I may be missing some things but then again its 12am here. Good luck and keep me posted.

All of those lights coming on at once is usually a problem with the alternator. Check the alternator/water pump belt. I had that problem too, but that didn't cause my engine to overheat. My power steering belt inverted on me and knocked my alternator loose which caused it to not grab onto the belt well.

So check that belt.

I had the same problem with my car, the problem is your alternator, or it was with mine. Apparantly i burned out a plug in my alternator which happened to be the voltage regulator. have her make sure her wires are connected properly to the alternator, and ask if this problem started when she revved the engine high, as mine started when i did. What i think happened is that when i revved it high, the engine moved so much that it popped the wire/plug loose. Also , have her check if the lights go away with her headlights/AC or heater on, because the Battery/brake light comes on when the battery is overcharging, and when the lights/ac are on, its taking extra charge away from the battery so its not over charging anymore and therefore the brake/batt light go away. If this doesnt help, have her stop driving the car as much as possible, since after a few days the battery will expand and explode, or something like that, from overcharging. She should have the alternator checked by a mechanic asap. just my $0.02 :thumb:
