Balance Shaft help!!

With a 6 bolt build up almost complete. I'm having some trouble with the balance shafts. The guy who's helping me build my engine took the shafts to the machine shop and had them cut down so they are only about 1.5'' long. He told me to pick up some new bearings and a new belt. He said i only need the bearings for the shaft that has the longer belt. Can somebody explain this to me with a picture mabye. Of which bearings i need exactly. From my understanding he's still putting both Stubby 1.5'' shafts back in. but only needs one belt does this sound right?
 
Honestly, I'd go to a vendor (slowboy racing, etc etc) and pick up a BS Elimination Kit.

You KNOW what you are gettings fits, and was made for the car. You also won't need / have the BS Belt anymore.

$30 - $40 er so, I believe, for the kit.

Just better safe than sorry, with something like that.
 
thats what i figured, and i wanted to just get the kit. I don't understand why he's doing this. I'll probably end up just getting the kit. thanks guys
 
No problem.. Look at it this way.

You don't have to worry about so-so machine shop work with old parts when you get the Kit. ;-)

That, and in my opinion, 90% of the reason to remove the shafts is to get rid of the belt. That thing will kill a Timing Belt in a heartbeat, and with it, at a minimum, your head.

You don't have that belt with the Kit, so I'm not sure at ALL what he's doing that you'd still need it.

Plus the bonus of increased oil pressure..heh

I agree buy the kit. Ditch the belt. Trust me 16 bent valves later. I learned the hard way.
Or you can.Spin the bearings around backwards. So to cover the oil holes, and remove the front shaft completely. Put the rear stubby back in, and ditch the belt..... Just need enough to turn the oil pump. That way you dont have to time the balance shafts...

:thumb: Yeah guys trust me I totally agree with you, on the previous engines we've built we've used the elimination kit. I really don't know what the hell he's doing but i don't want to be the test subject!! Thanks for your help guys.
 
ok i found out what he's doing now for sure. He's not using the balance shaft belt at all. Basically he's turning the B.S. bearings around so that they cover up the oil passages. then reinstalling about a 1.5" piece of balance shaft. So there is no belt going to it. My guess is he did this all to save me some money since i'ts the same thing as the elimination kit. :p
 
The eliminator kits come with a stubby shaft for the rear (attached with the oil pump gears), however nothing goes in the front location besides the blockoff bearing and the plug in the front case.
 
Doesn't seem like a good idea to shorten the balance shaft. Either get the subby shaft or if you want to turn high rpms and not worry about possibilty of taking out the oil pump due to the unsupported weight, have the shop just turn the weight off of the stock one in a lathe so it can still be supported by the bearing(obviously you would now need a new shaft since the guy already wrecked yours for this).
 
thats what i'm getting, the stubby shaft. i must have mis heard what he was saying. but i saw it and it looks pretty good to me.
