Hello Guys,
I need some helps on troubleshooting this bizzard problem. My car is having a weird backfire noises (pop, pop, pop, unfortunately, no flame shooting out) that only happen when the engine is warm or 10-15mins of driving. In addition, the backfire noises sometime shutdown the engine that i have to pull over, wait for a few mins before i can start the engine again. It shutdown the engine when i am in neutral going downhill. Backfire noises happen when it accelerates.
- I am running at 10-11 psi
- 4-5 months old spark plugs & wires gap at .28
- Air filter is old.

My solutions to the problem are:
- the car has an exhaust leak somewhere. But how could it possibly shutdown the eninge ?
- timming problem. (i don't think it's possible)

What do you guys think? Any other suggestions ?

Thanks
V

well... first off, for your safety, DO NOT CRUISE DOWNHILL IN NEUTRAL!!! What would happen if you really on your brakes too much while in a car going downhill? Brakes OVERHEAT and may fail to stop your car should an emergency happen.. anyway

timing would be an issue... maybe a vehicle speed sensor... car got bad gas mileage? I would check the O2 sensor as well..

Thanks for the advice. Actually, the car has good gas mileage ? 290-300 miles/tank highway and city

My CEL is off. It didn't indicate anything at all. How would timing caused this problem. The problem happens when the engine is hot meaning 10-15 mins of driving

First off, replace the air filter. Change the fuel filter at the same time. Check for pre o2 exhaust leaks, check coolant temp sensor, and test for boost leaks.

Do you know of any good links that show people how to replace 2g fuel filter? Today, i looked at the fuel filter, there is no space to do the work. In addition, when i took off my exhaust manifold the inside was white instead of black carbon. Is that means i am running lean? And how do i fix the lean problem ?

Thanks

As far as the fuel filter all I did was remove the battery and battery stand and that gave me enough room to get in there and replace it. I am known for doing things the hard way.
There might be an easier way to do it. But the only way I see to make more room back there is to remove the motor.

Well, i changed the O2 and fuel filter but it didn't solve the problem. Every time the engine gets hot it stalls, causing backfire, rpm jumping around. In order for it to start again i have to turn off the engine wait for a few minutes and start the car. When it gets hot again the same problem happen backfire noises, rpm jumping, and the engine stalls.

Could anyone help me diagnose this problem please

I would check cam timing.

How cam timing could have caused this problem? Could you explain it to me ? In addition, it's a 2g. You can't change the timing unless you have dsmlink which i don't.

Thank you for your reply

 The problem is still alive. I don't want to drive rental car to school and work everyday. Anyone help me out please

Changed parts/Tested:
- O2
- spark plugs (NGK .028)
- Fuel Filter
- Air filter
- CAS
- Thermostat
- Radiator Cap
- Compression Test (150psi all 4 cylinders)
- MAS

The problem still the same
