Anyone remove their transfer case?

Pick up a Chiltons' or a Haynes if nothing else but for the illustrations of the parts and where the bolts go for them.

There are 5 long bolts on the transfer case, three at the bottom, two on top. All use a 14 mm socket (if that's not it, then it's a 17 mm). After you remove the bolts, get a floor jack and a large screwdriver. Support the transfer case with the jack and carefully pry the transfer case from the transmission. After you pull the transfer case off, make sure the driveshaft is supported either with some wood blocks or use a wire hanger to keep it up in the air and not on the ground. Takes an hour to get off if you're a first timer, 15 if you've done it a time or two.

Thanks for the info, I looked in the Haynes and Chilton but they make it look so easy and give very little info(I NEED TONS OF PICTURES :D ). I took it to a shop and they said, "we're not touching that, springs and parts will fly everywhere when you pull it off, I looked at them like WTF . And I'm guessing I should just use RTV for the gasket?
Thx again, charlie :thumb: :talon:

It actually is that easy. The only difficulty will be in finding the bolts to pull them off. No gaskets, just a seal in the back for the driveshaft, and a seal for the transmission's output shaft.

I am kinda in the same boat and dont know what to do next.

Im in the process of swapping just the engines. I have all the bolts off the transfer case and can slide it out.

The problem im having is the shaft that goes into the transfer case is being pulled out with the case as i pry towards the driver side of the car to get it out. How do I stop this shaft from sliding?

The output shaft should not come out. It is normally retained by a small steel ball trapped by the VC. Yours has either been removed (taken apart and not put back together properly) or something is broken. I'd suggest a thorough inspection once you get things apart.

I ended up getting it off.

That shaft I could pull all the way out. Not sure if that is supposed to be like that.

It's a good idea to replace them, I've had more than one leak, so I just replace them whenever I take the T-case off.

Not unless it was previously leaking or you damaged it.
I've had T-cases off dozens of times on my cars and have had no problems.

What is the OEM name for these seals in case I need to go to satan for them? Would you happen to have OEM part numbers? Or refer me to where I can find these seals on the interent? I'm in the process of pulling the motor out of my brothers 92 tsi awd, it's my fist time working on a awd, any advice would be appreciatied. The reason I'm pulling the motor is because both of the drivers side halfshaft bracket bolts broke off inside the block, what a pain.
