Anyone think I can hit 800 miles on this tank? Any projections for the maximum I could get over one tank? Temps were mostly in the 30's for this tank. So you can be optimistic for spring :)

No freaking way. something mustve been wrong with my old 420a i was barely hitting 200

maybe that was because of your driving habits :p haha a

In fact. this has more to do with fuel economy than the engine, aero and rolling resistance combined. :D.

It's nice to be able to match a prius in mpg and still beat almost any other N/A 4 cylinder in the 1/4.

that was at leon batley hitting 200 to the tank that says alot bout his driving habits LOL......... but idk what your doing to hit 400 in a half a tank are you one of the people that be turning the cars off at certing point driving LOL

I realize. I was just agreeing and adding to what you were saying.

I don't "turn the car off", but I do have a motor-kill switch.

That's crazy man, I know with my old 420a i used to get great gas milage but not that great. I think it was like 380 or so to a FULL tank if i can remember correctly. Now im getting about 350sh on my 4g63 which isn't too bad neither.ROFL

how did you drive it? LOL

I might have a heavy gas foot. Something I will keep an eye on now. I wanna get good gas mileage

I hypermile. I don't expect anyone here to be able to do this...without practice.

I sat in a hypermilers' meeting once and got chastised for my car regularly doing 30-32 mpg. As well, I was told that I would actually save no time driving at 70 or 75 mph compared to one of the group members at 55 or 60 mph -- and they had calculations to prove it.

My opinion of hypermiling communities dropped tremendously after that meeting. It is very cool to hear about people getting outstanding mileage on their cars, but that particular group of folks really rubbed me the wrong way.

For what it is worth, I don't think 800 miles on the tank is outside the realm of possibility. A 420A naturally gets better mileage than any turbo DSM and a member here was able to squeak out around 700 miles on his turbo 1G: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/articles-miscellaneous/254223-how-save-gas.html.

Doesnt hypermiling require me to remove all my interior and include stuff like extreme weight reduction.

Update:
Almost the end of week two on the same tank.
Maybe I can get 175 miles out of this quarter? :)

The community of which I'm a part CleanMPG don't actually make people feel bad about their cars or what they get. As long as you do your best to save gas within reason, they'll always be there to "cheer" you on. There are guys on there with trucks, commercial trucks even. It's a fun community and I encourage anyone on here to join. Give CleanMPG a shot. Definitely worth it.

Alright I don't wanna say the picture doesn't prove anything but in the internet world its suspect to credibility attack. SO. Do what I'm doing. All the non beleivers of this hypermiling. Give it a shot like myself. Me and my wife talked about it and now were gonna hyper for the next couple of weeks. To see how much we can save and if its true. Well pass this word along.

Awesome! If you you introduce yourself on the site, people will be more than happy to welcome you, ask about your commute and provide tips as well as expectations. Contrary to what is believed, the 4g63 turbo is rated pretty much the same as the 420a. AWD is what kills the mileage. Stay out of boost and your mileage can be as good as mine.

I suggest starting out with simple techniques. properly inflate your tires (mine ar at 60 psi, but one slow leaks and drops 20 psi in one week, so I have to keep refilling. Can't wait till i get new wheels this spring. )

At this rate, I'm using about half the amount of gas I was using before. It's the equivalent (to me) of paying <$2.00/gallon. I would've spent $50 to fill my tank up a few days ago if I wasn't hypermiling. (395 miles). Check out my log and see my last tank prior to hypermiling this season. I filled up on Feb 17th or so I think..March second and still have another week of gas in the tank.
Leon: do you have an ultragauge or scangauge?

My car got 50 MPG on this trip to Jay Peak in 2001.

Now it gets 20 with combined city/hwy/strip, and on trips I can eek out aroung 28-30mpg if I'm lucky.

Those cars are rated right around 27/35 city highway and are fuel misers. A member had a car like that and regularly got around 55mpg. What did you do with it (modification, any changes etc.)

Just a heads up to those cruising this thread. It is dangerous to overfill your tires. You cannot/should not run out and just dump 60psi into your tires for improved MPG. Maximum rating on most high-end tires is only 51psi. Manual calls for ~30.

And yes, I realize that these "hypermilers" are taking things beyond what your average driver might do, and noting against Ricardo18 at all, but just be smart and safe when you do it.

Thanks for bringing that up :)

I wont recommend going above your max sidewall, but I'm being honest. I've run at max sidewall, but I personally find gains beyond this. The auto manufacturer's 32psi recommended pressure is for a compromise between a compliant ride and gas mileage.

Just to add more information (again, no recommendation). Do what you feel comfortable with. I've been doing this on and off for 4 years. Tire pressures were always up there and never once had a problem. Do research before you make a solid decision one way or another.

Right now I don't really have any bad roads to traverse save for once or twice a week, and it doesn't bother me.

Some people experience rattles in the car due to higher tire pressure, some don't even notice it.

Some people claim uneven wear, but if you're experiencing uneven wear, I can all but guarantee you need an alignment.

I'll also be lowering my car as this helps with aerodynamics..

One more thing. Don't get it twisted. Hypermilers don't remove stuff from their car and don't do anything that will damage resale value of the vehicle. Those are "ecomodders". They have their own forum and are distinct.

I'm also upgrading to lighter 14.5lb 15" rims this spring. Factory alloys will be used in winter. Aside from the Aftermarket wheels, low rolling resistance (LRR) tires and lowering, (and all the underhood N/A goodies ;) ), I don't modify

Here's a graphical breakdown of this tank. This may help with projections a bit LOL Btw: 100% is the "full" line, 0 % is the last line before "E":

The sudden drop at 400 miles was the damn northeast snowstorm we had.

Each mile I drive equates to 0.1282 % of my tank, and using "a" as the gallon value of that percentage:

A) If I have 15 gallons of fuel, (15gallons X 0.1282%) = 100%/"a"gallons: a = 0.01923 gallons/mile.

B) If I have 16 gallons of fuel, (16gallons X 0.1282%) = 100%/"a"gallons: a = 0.020512 gallons/mile.

C) If I have 17 gallons of fuel, (17gallons X 0.1282%) = 100%/"a"gallons: a = 0.021794 gallons/mile.

D) If went out of the way and increased capacity to 25 gallons of fuel, (25 gallons X 0.1282%) = 100%/"a"gallons: a = 0.03205 gallons/mile.

Now, you can easily convert those values to miles/gallon by using one as a numerator and performing simple division.
A) 52mpg
B) 48.75mpg
C) 45.88mpg
D) 31.2mpg > This is one mpg better than what I would average without hypermiling. For simplicity's sake, I'll just say this is my average. If I've been putting 17 gallons in my car, then congrats to me, I get 8 extra gallons of gas per tank. At $4.00/gallon, that's $32 every time I fill up.

Also, for simplicity's sake, let's say my fill up frequency remains the same at once/week. $32 X 52 = $1664/year saved or spent on fuel. Keep in mind these are winter numbers, so they will get better in summer.

That's a nice "boost" present after a year ;). So yeah, here's a way to save and boost a year from now if you have a 420A :D

Let's say I only fill up once every other week, instead of every week.

$4x16 gallons = $64/week 52 weeks X $64 = $3328/yr in fuel

Now let's say I hypermile and fill up every two weeks, which is now 26 weeks out of the year:

26 X $64 = $1664/year saved/paid for fuel. Same result.

had a trip to Massachusetts today (average speed of about 67-68mph). Saw cheap gas and decided to fill up:

It was a new gas station and the fill spot is flat (compared to the fill spot at my regular station). When the car is tilted down in the front relative to the back, I can get more fuel in and this is how I usually fill. Save for that slight difference which I don't think really mattered as I filled with the tip of the hose barely in and got as much gas as I could without rocking the car (known to allow you to add more gas).

Total fill of exactly 13.022 gallons over 621 miles which came up to 47.7mpg.

I didn't get the 175 :(. When the gauge went down to 25%, I had 566 miles on the clock. So I was 9 miles shy of the 175. To be fair I had to drive a lot faster than I normally would due to a "race against time".
