Advance/retard Timing

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

Do you mean: "would increasing or decreasing base timing affect a DSM's performance?"

Advancing base timing too far would technically increase performance, at the risk that the ECU could not retard the timing far enough to prevent your engine from exploding. Notice why people don't do it.

Retarding base timing would lose power.

If you meant "What does timing do" or other basic question, I suggest you look for an automotive site, as it's not specific to DSM's.

JoeWagon, what you quoted is exactly what i meant to ask. I should have explained myself more, but was already afraid of getting flamed for asking the question. Reason I ask is, just this morning I went to pick up coffee and pulled up to a non local DSM that i've never seen before. Anyways I start talking to the guy and to make a long story short, he told to advance my timing because he did it and the result was a gain in power. He never told me how much to advance it or shyt, which is why i thought he was full of the forementioned substance. Came home at lunch to ask you guys, cuz i knew someone on here would know, and would reply very fast. I guess I have my answer. Substantial power increase??? I'm not pissing around with my timing anyways, but still curious to know. Thanks again guys...

I have a feeling that he is maybe on old muscle car guy or a stupid "mad tyte tuner yo". on our cars there is no need to advance timminng to try and make more power. Alot of older guys are used to doing that with muscle cars or other non computer vehcile becasue it helps them. For us if you set the base timming at 5 degrees. Then you are dead nuts on. Some people that are very heaving into getting the perfect tune on there car will play with it but just a few degrees here and there.

ha ha ha...ya, i guess i shouldn't take advice from a dsm driver with a mullet...LOL. he actually looked like he should be driving like an 81 firechicken or something like that...LOL.
his car actually idled like shit. said he never had cams either. could his awesome timing advance actually have affected his idle? the last dsm i heard run like that had 272 cams in it. thanks once more...

;)
