98 gst confusion (power loss)

Iam new to the dsm community.. and i love it i just purchased a 98 gst and i fell in love. it was sitting there for about 2 months without bieng turned on it looks like it has gone threw hell and bak, it is stock with a magna flow exaust and intrax springs the body is great but the engine looks like it was ragged on, finally got it started and changed the plugs and cables, regular check up and ran good but to my knowledge i really dont know what a good condition gst drove like.. then i found out when i raced a stock gst with some ebay filter and he pulled about 2 cars on me, i was shocked i came to this forum increased my knowledge and searched my car to my surprise to boost control seleniod was removed... and after putting everything bak i realized my check engine light turned on .. the light hasnt turned of since and checked the setup and its right...ok here is when i tell myself "isnt my car sopose to be a lil faster?". w/e the car felt good though so i didnt put to much mind to it... then i started realizing my car feels faster on some days than others.. one day ill slip tire on WOT in 1st on have a hard chirp in second and other days i feel like the car wont really move?? wierd right.. finally what made me type this question was when i raced my friends gs-r its a 94 with msd ignition system headers evo2 exaust and ram intake...i raced him driving home from the purchase..(he took me 2 buy the car).. he got me by 4-5 cars of a stop sign, then after the tune up i raced him again of a light and he pulled 2 cars on me... then yesturday i raced him again kept up 1st and 2nd gear missed 3rd and got so pissed cause i felt like i had him..today i race him and again he beats me by 2-3 cars..?? i am so confused can som-1 help me ...sorry for this bieng so long but i hope som1 has patience give me a piece of mind..ohh 1 more thing.. i feel like my car runs harder with the bov tube(running to the intake) tight on the intake side but slightly gaped on the bov end.. but not completly removed cause then like so the car isnt running right....(lost the clamp on the bov end thats how i found out bout the power adding ).... You should definately keep it clamped (BOV) otherwise it brings in unmetered air and can run lean. Running on the street is a hard judge, there are too many variables. If you really want to know take it to a DSM shop with a dyno and find out for sure what it is doing.

Hey thankx for reading... that was my first thread i posted and i just registerd like 3 hours ago too... but man i dont know where there might be one around here (dsm dyno shop).. (miami fl) .. i have to look in to it.. plus one thing is that i am burnig alot of gas more than normal.. i fill up my tank and i get about 125-140 on a tank thats horrible and i giv it WOT about 6 times on a tank... well is it horrable?? well thank u very much .....

loss of power, burning alot of gas... makes me think that you might have a boost leak?

ok.
boost leak tester.
switch to HARD i/c piping.
get an open air filter
do ALL free mods.
Go hand that GS-R's ass to him

oh and make sure you have fresh oil.

A boost leak isn't going to throw a cel. That still might be part of the problem so you definatley need to check for it.

loss of power, bad gas mileage, and cel.

sounds like a bad o2 sensor. you can get one for 50-60 bucks. I'm pretty sure that's your problem.

hey guys... thanks alot !!!! i really appreciate all ur replys!! i really feel good knowing i can come here and state my problems and knowing u guyz got my back...thanks i am going to get all that stuff checked out ASAP... hey mike thanks for the advice.. i am going to suprise that vtech rice burning toaster on wheels... ...j/p but man thanks alot..ANYBODY FEEL FREE TO SHARE OPINION.... can anybody tell me ware i can go to find a front bumper for cheap and besides the BCS removal and the cleaning of the fmic arew there any other free mods?? i heard about cutting of a tube somwhare form the bov?? any1 heard of that?

I don't know about cutting any tubes around the bov, but a common upgrade for guys with 2g's is to buy an aftermarket upper inner cooler pipe with a flange for a 1st gen bov.

The stock 2g bov's are garbage when any boost upgrades are added.

Oy yea one more thing... how do i clean out my stock intercooler???......cause i want to do that wen i change out my ic piping??

Just spray it off with a garden hose.

Then, if you want, you can fill it up with water and move it around to check for any water leaking out. If it's leaking out then you're going to need to get it fixed. Otherwise you'll be having a boost leak problem.
