Guys,

I am hoping someone can shed some light onto a problem that I have begun to experience on my 97 Eclipse GSX.

Relevant mods-

A/T tranny that has 10,000 miles on it (bought new from dealer)
Precision Industries Dragon torque converter
Black spring shift kit
B&M tranny cooler

Symptoms began 1 month ago.

On a cold start overnight or 3+ hours parked the trans will not engage into drive or reverse the car revs like it is in neutral. I have noticed that if I start the car and let it sit idle for 30-40 seconds and then shift, it will engage fine. No other symptoms when driving it or on a warm start. Trans does not slip or drop out of gear when warmed up.

I had the mitsu dealer take a look at it. They hooked up pressure gauges and found that there was no pressure in the trans lines on a cold start until about 30 seconds after start up. After this short time frame the pressure jumped to factory specs. They dropped the pan and found no debris and the filter was clean. They also blew air through the trans cooler to make sure there were no clogs in the system.

After having it for 3 days they gave me a call to inform me that the trans would need to be dropped in order to troubleshoot further however, I wanted to see if anyone here has experienced similar symptoms and what the fix might be.

Thanks for the help,

Sam

i had that in my 97 GS-T and i ended up having to get the whole tranny rebuilt. something that had to do with the solenoid. i'd have a real tranny place check it out before it gets worst. after the rebuid, never had that problem again. only thing i don't like is that i didn't have the money for the nice IPT tanny at the time :(

I've had that problem before. On a stock tranny that has some miles on it, it is common. To make your tranny last with the stock manual valve in, when you start it up you should always put it in neutral so it starts pumping right away. Let it idle down and then put it in gear. This saves the clutches.

you mentioned "stock manual valve". Is there a modified manual valve? What is the job of the manual valve and how does a modified manual valve improve over the stock? Could this be a valve body associated problem?

The one that IPT sells does the same thing. It is a very good upgrade on these trannys.
