I am planning on pulling my engine here in a couple days. I am sort of a noob at all this car stuff but I am pretty mechanically inclined so I think I will do okay. I have a friend to help out and I know he knows a good deal about cars but I want to know exactly what I am going to have to do so there is no confusion.

I am looking to pull my engine and I have no idea what the stand thing is called that I need to get to pull the engine. Is there some where I can rent one of these?

Roughly, what are the steps needed to pull my engine?
Any tips or hints to help make this process semi-simple?

Any and all information would be great. Thanks guys!

They call them cherry pickers. Check on ebay or if there is a kragens/autozone/etc. around, they should have them.

Here I used to rent one for a half day for $15.00 (most tool and equiptment places have them) until I got My own. Grab a Haynes or chiltons and it will give you a walkthrough of the best order to do it all in.

Heh. Maybe in shops with fat-fingered mechanics. :D It's an engine hoist, but most people call them "cherry pickers" anyways. You might want to consider picking up an engine stand from Harbor Freight for about $40. They are awesome when you're stripping down or building up the engine when it's out of the car. Google "Harbor Freight Tools" and you'll find them.

Here is a write up from 2GNT walking you through everything having to do with the rebuild:
http://www.2gnt.com/www/corbin/rebuild.html

Tips for getting the motor out:
-Pull the fuel and ASD relays, then crank car over until the fuel pressure is relieved
-Disconnect the battery
-Disconnect the entire wire harness and tie it off out of the way
-Drain the oil
-Drain the coolant
-Disconnect the fuel line at the rail
-Remove the crossmember under the engine (front motor mount too)
-Remove the Crank Pulley (might have to remove the passenger side motor mount)
-Hang PS pump and AC over fender (put a blanket under them)
-Remove header/exhaust manifold
-Leave the tranny in place.
-Remove the starter
-Access the four flexplate bolts through the panel on the bellhousing next to the oil pan
-Hang engine on cherry picker
-Unbolt rear motor mount
-Unbolt tranny from block
-Raise engine

This is just what I remember off the top of my head. Should get you there. Good luck and have fun. It's a great learning project. Few things in life are as sweet as hearing your car start in the morning before work and knowing you built the engine loping under the hood. :thumb:

Just to let ya know called AutoZone and Advnace Auto and asked for a CHERRY Picker was told to go to HEAVY machinary renter was told that they had a ENGINE HOIST. Call any dealership and ask for a cherry picker. Hope ya like getting laughed at....

I know what it's proper name is. That doesn't change the fact that a lot of people call them "cherry pickers." Certified by GMC. Good for you, ace. Way to take it personal. :thumb:

Not taking it personal, if somebody called the shop I would tell them its called a Engine hoist not a cherry picker. Nothing personal, just calling it by its original name....
