well the other day i was driving all of the sudden my car started stuttering on take off, then it went away, but the last 2 days its gotten worse and worse, its stutters bad on take off all the way up thru the gears, but sometimes it kick in and get full power but only for a second at about 3000 or 4000 rpms.

when idle the car vibrates bad.

a few months ago i had the timing belt and water pump changed, the car never idled right after that was done, but it always ran well once u took off. i couldn't have it fixed because i had a guy do it that my friend new. but like i said it ran well, just didn't idle quite right.

i also changed the fuel filter a few months back and air filter.

changed the spark plugs, and all the wires get good connection, all cylinders are firing, i took each wire off to check it.

there seems to be no vacuum leaks.

and the car also smells weird after driving it, like somethings getting really hot, the water gage in the car is fine tho, I'm thinking it may be oxygen sensor or catalytic converter?

i don't have much money, and cant just send it to the shop, so any advise would be great.

i have a 1992 Plymouth Laser and a 1992 Mitsubishi Eclipse 1.8L cars, and both of them did this. my laser was caused because a fuel injector wire went bad and it didn't spray fuel into the cylinder. the eclipse on the other hand had a bad ECU and it wasn't sending fuel to a cylinder. but it could be something else, i don't know. have a mechanic check out the ECU and the injector wires ;)

(see if you notice any funny smell like wires burning through)

i took each plug wire off, and the car ran worse on every cylinder i took a wire off, so i guess they are all getting gas.

taking it to the shop is going to cost 75 bucs just to get it looked at. right now i am out of work waiting for disability, i have absolutely no cash, bad timing i guess.

Try pulling a vaccum hose off the EGR valve. If the EGR valve is going bad (or gets trash in it) it can cause systems similar to what you've described. Leave the hose off and drive the car around some to see if the problem goes away. That might not be your problem, but it something easy to check. :thumb:

first of all does your check injen lite come on???? if so do the key dance or take it to autozone or what not and get the p codes.... there are sooo many things that can make your car act this way
from jumping a tooth on your timming belt to your fule pump going out, we can all better help you if you help us more :thumb:

if it has never idled right after the timing belt was done then when he put it back on he didn't set the timing correctly...if its off by even one tooth it will idle wierd and studder...i highly suggest that you get that fixed first.

not nessisaraly, after i got my timming belt replaced it jumped 2 teeth and it ran fine, each car is differnt :thumbdown

you would be the ONLY person who i have EVER seen not have a bad idle, especially at 2 teeth off....the conditions he describes fits timing off to a tee..

my timing belt was off by 1/2 a tooth and it ran like complete ass....you'd deff be in the vast minority being able to run on 2 teeth off...the spark wouldn't match the cam angle sensor causing misfire like crazy at that much discrepancy

WHAT???? The only way this would happen is if you put the belt on 2 teeth off in the first place. Secondly timing belts do not just "jump 2 teeth" unless they are not installed properly in the first place. I too have had mine off by half a tooth and it would not even start and idle. All cars may be different but not in this department. That statement works with HP #'s and performance issues but not with these types of symptoms or sensors being involved.

i get no check engine light.

after my timing belt and water pump was changed the car idled rough but ran good over all, it just idled a little bad.

this just started like 4 months after i had that changed, it runs rough at all rpm ranges, sometimes it will kick in and give me full power, but that only lasts like a second.

ok update, it took the plugs and wires off....

the first and 4th plug holes were full of oil, valve cover gasket must be leaking, but the 1st and 4th sparkplugs looks clean where it sparks, but the second and 3rd were very black.

so i cleaned everything off and put it back together, it was running sweet, then about a mile down the road it started again.

think new valve cover gasket, new plugs new wires would fix it up?

i also took off the hoses to the EGR but it ran the same with it hooked up or off. i did this the same time, so i dunno if it was me messing with the egr made it run good for a mile or the plugs.

i just changed thos plugs about 6 months ago, bosch platinums.

my car timing is off to check the spark plugs and see if the car is run lean if the spark plug is white than the cars timing is off and I is run lean and you are losing up to 20 hp

yah the dushes at the shop i took my car to tryed to pull a fast one on me by not changing the tenioer, the best part didnt even get it out of the parking lot and my check enjen lite came on, so i took it to them and they fixed it, i went like 30 miles down the road and it came back... then they kept my car for 2 days just to replace the tensioer... i was completly pissed expecialy after they told me it jumped not 1 but 2 teeth, but it ran just fine while i was driving the check injen lite just came on thats all :thumb:

on my 1g GS, i had a loose injector wire. it would stutter REALLY bad in lower rpms. sometimes my check engine light would come on.. sometimes not. i pulled the codes.. sure enough, injector.

another problem i had that somewhat resembles this... one day i took my intake off and lost the hose clamp for it. it would fall off or just hang off, making my car stutter and run as slow as a 1.8

hope that helps
