I recentally looked at a 95 esi with 100k. the guy is asking 2800. i got him down to 2500. the only problem is that he says the car is burning oil and told me it might need a new head gasket to fix it. i also talked to my mechanic and he said that the cat converter eventually will also need to be replaced if the car is burning oil. the body of the car is in great shape and the interior is ok. is any of this information true? im low on money but probally will be able to replace the water pump and timing belt right away due to the millage. but as far as the oil burning goes, should i try to get him to come down any more? or back away from the car and look for another? i really want a dsm but dont want to get screwed over ..thanks

seeing that your new here and let me be the first to say :thumb: welcome. but i also see your after a esi? i know all the eclipse's and talons may look alike and the do in terms. yet if you have the money i say the best bet for you at this time is to leave that talon alone and find your self an economical car for now so that you have a better chance to explore your options and learn more on the eclipse purchase. or you can foot it for now and save for a car more well in doubt and with out faults prier to purchase.

Make sure you do some reading before you get an ESi. I jumped in without doing research thinking I could pick up an ESi and toss a turbo in it soon after. Adding turbo to these cars runs upwards of $3000 If your not in it for the turbo then disreguard my post. If your thinking of adding turbo then think about it, I dont want to see you end up in the same boat I did. 1g (90-94)turbo cars can be found around the price of that Talon, and 1g blocks hold up better than 2g (95-up) blocks in most cases. And welcome to the DSM scene. ;)

I would like to say most turbo kits go for a mere $2k, and if you use the budget one posted by GsGoinFast found here: http://dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=181134 ; goes for less then that, the kit is very cheap to put together. Mostly, you might just want to research the DSM N/T and Turbos and then choose which you would prefer. I went N/T because the looks, and didn't know nothing. Now I know I don't need a turbo model, since I can turbo the 420A without the hassle of selling it and buying another car. Good luck. :thumb:

thanks for the warm welcome guys haha....yea i have been researching both n/t and turbo for awhile now. And i dont see any point to turbo the n/t...i would rather just get a dsm with 4g63. IMO i dont see any reason to dump money into the 420a to get it to maintain a turbo and for the price of the turbo itself..I really just wanted to know if you gys think buying that esi which might need a head gasket replacement would be a good or bad idea for the price.

Buying anything that needs work, when your low on cash is a bad idea. If you really want a dsm, save your cash for something a lil better and thats in working order when you buy it. Dsm's are nice cars if you treat them right, and if you don't have to money or know how to keep them maintained, they WILL let you down.
I love my dsm to death, and its always maintenance before performance.

Anyways I wouldn't bother getting into why people bought NT's and turbo'd them instead of selling them for a 4g63 model. We have our reasons!

I guess my question for you is why do u want a dsm?
And will the NT satsify you?

My NT satisfied me for a longtime before I turbo'd it. Now I'm a lil faster than before, and I learned a lot doing it, so I'm satisfied with my turbo'd 420a

What i really ment was that when someone is looking for a dsm it wouldn't make sence to buy a n/t for the sole reason of putting a turbo in.. i can see why you did what you did, got a n/t then realize it wasn't enough for you.

to answer your question i dont think a n/t will really satisfy me but i need a car asap and its hard to find a 4g63 dsm in good condition if any dsm's at all in my area

Well if you need a car asap, go with something that isn't broken to begin with. Unless you get that car inspected and find out if there is anything else wrong or find out exactly what is wrong. Then you can price how much its going to cost to fix, and figure out how much to pay him. And see how much money you'll have left in your own pocket.

Just dont' want to see you get stucking dropping money(maintance) in a car that it looks like your gonna sell anyways when you get more money.

You should be able to find a nice 95 RS or GS for under $2,500 running. Just be patient and look. I know around here theres about 15 that run fine for around $2k . If you really want a GST/X, wait, find the perfect one, but relize it's going to cost more then $3k, unless you find a perfect deal. I found a gsx for $2k, but it needed a block, and well was a perfect price / condition for me. Next, an MKIV Toyota Supra Shell, for $5k~ then build to hell!

Just as another bit of information on the subject. I am currently looking to buy a nearly mint condition 97 ESi with two relatively simple mechanical problems with it for $3000. The two problems are: leaking rear main ($15 and a full day pulling tranny to replace it) and a bad heli-coiled spark plug, which will require the tracking down of a decent used head to swap over all the valvetrain into. Appearance-wise, this DSM is cherry.

I could buy it tomorrow and just drive it for at least 6 months before I would HAVE to fix anything.

Don't seem like to bad a deal for a 97. Head would cost around 100ish and the other you said just mainly time. I don't see why not, seems like you know what it takes to fix it, so your at an advantage. Mine was fed from the start, I only have fixed 75% of the problems over a year...sheesh.
