95 or ross pistons???

heres the deal. i took apart my 91 tsi awd apart because of smoking issues. turns out i cracked three of my pistons. so what i wanted to do was to put 2g pistons on 1g rods. but a friend said i wont be able to because the cylinder walls have damage and i have to get them bored .020 over. do i have to bore them out or can i hone them?? a friend said i wont be able to install the 2g piston when i bore the walls out because they wont fit, is this true?? i thought it was the rings that sit the pistons?? can i use the 2g pistons if i bore it .020 over?? he said hell sell me ross pistons installed on the rods for $100, but he only has three. he said he can get the other for 50 bux. hes going to also sell me 95 pistons for $50 bux. which ever i want. the ross only have about 1000 miles on them. what should i do??? how much will the machining cost?? please help

that owuld be a good deal for the pistons if they are new

if you had wall damage and just honed it out you would still have scares in the walls most likely. so you need to bore it .20 over and no the stock pistons will not fit you will have to get pistons that are for a .20 over bore.

if you are going to the trouble why take a chance just do it right. and then you wont have to worry about the rings trying to set in a damaged cylinder.

They dont have to be mitsu to be OEM. My pistons arent mitsu, but they are 2g pistons.

I paid $200 shipped for all 4 pistons, rings, and pins.

Properly machining 1G big rods to fit the 2G pistons costs around $40 per rod. So you need to tack on another $160 or so to truly compare the two methods.

With forged pistons costing so little in now days, I do not believe that 2G pistons make much sense anymore.

i was told that it would be 40 to machine all 4 rods and another 100 to get my crank and rods balanced and then hang the pistons.

at that price, i say go for it. im a huge fan of the 1g/2g combo.

That is a great price for this machining, but you better make sure that they do a good job. Messing up wrist pin hole diameter can have some pretty severe consequences…

they are a very well know shop around here. i am giving them all the specs that they need and it should come out good.
