Ok so I've read mass amounts of tech articles in the past 72hrs. and learned much. But I am new to DSM's and book smarts is only going to get me so far. ADHD doesn't help either...

So I have this 93 TSi I picked up 3 days ago. The car has been, dare I say, "worked" on. The previous owner said the MPI relay (???) was bad and the balance shafts were still installed. The engine is a 6 Bolt and doesn't look all too bad inside. He also gave me a 7 Bolt short block that was recently rebuilt with new pistons/rods/crank and oil pump.

I'm missing a myriad of fasteners and other misc. things. Also one of the turbo studs is broken, where do I get those? I'm wondering if I should bite the bullet and buy a rebuilt engine from a DSM collector I know, or try to save this "thing" sitting in there now covered in power steering fluid.

Any and all advice is helpful and welcome and please feel free to "yell" at me if I did something wrong that goes against rules.

..What is wrong with the current motor?

Thank you.

Previous owner said balance shafts. I'm taking his word as of yet but he didnt seem very trust worthy. And after finally tearing into the car and removing the 50lb. bondo fenders I will not believe anything he says.

I think I'm going to check up on the shafts and see if they are even still in there and if so remove them per every tech articles instructions. Also make sure if they are removed it was done right. Otherwise I have not heard or seen this engine run and no battery yet so I can't turn it over to check anything else.

I highly recommend looking into downloading the mitsubishi CAPS program. That's the parts lookup program that the dealers use. It'll help you find part numbers for what you're looking for. Google mitsubishi CAPS and you should be able to find a place to download it. Then use that information to plug into some of the online dealers to lookup prices. The vendors page here will point you to a few dealers that you can use or use mitsubishiparts.net That's where I usually lookup prices.

I also highly recommend VFAQ Site - Visual Frequently Answered Questions if you haven't already seen it. A ton of information there that can help you with some of the engine related stuff.

Hope this helps.

+1 ^^ . also i'd say either way your gonna have to buy the fasteners.. so do that get her rolling.. and let it do the talking for you .. leakdown .. compression.. and if you get her up and running boost leak .. thousands of things you could do... but thats where i'd start .. if your goal is to get her rolling.. ohhhh most important.... maintenance... filter and fluids... etc..
